Like other reviewers I found that that the decor in the rooms was tired, stained, and in need of T.L.C - discoloured grout on the tiles behind the sink and shower area, dirty marks behind toilets do not mark this place too highly. There were, however, some good points - the staff during our stay were very helpful and we... More

Awful place. The website shows a beautiful facade of the main hotel with no photos of the rooms. We now know why. To compare to a prison camp would be an insult to prison camps. How anyone could like staying here is beyond belief. The staff seemed pleasant and must be used to people being unhappy as our money was... More

I was a little reluctant to stay here as it only had a 3 star review. However I was very surprised. Room light, airy and clean, a few bare patches on the carpet but nothing to worry about. Food was gods value and excellent. Bar was lovely and staff more so.

A hot, unclean room with a fine collection of insects alive and dead, and a reception service that lacked enthusiasm. Management fortunately swiftly refunded my stay so I could leave as fast as possible. I did not have the chance to try the food, but just from a glance I wasn't inspired by the dining room- a big disappointment for... More

I stayed here as I had a meeting early the next morning. It didn't bode well when I checked in. The woman at reception was stand-offish and unhelpful. The room was awful. It was tired, every item of furniture and every surface was chipped, damaged, dirty and shabby. I was scared to walk on the carpet as I hadn't taken... More

I stayed here whilst working in the area (July 2014), I arrived fairly late in the evening and the hotel allocated my room (booked through one of the usual internet agents), I was only staying the one night and was eager to get to bed, but before I could I had to 'nip back out' to go down to Tescos... You know what people think of a place when your 6 year old daughter describes it as 'shabby'!! I chose this venue as a meeting point for family to celebrate my parents ruby wedding anniversary and while we had a lovely time it probably wasn't the sort of place I pictured when I booked a De Vere hotel! The grounds... More

Myself, sister and mother stayed for two nights at Uplands House whilst attending a wedding nearby. We paid a very good price and were surprised at the service, breakfast and well equipped rooms. The whole experience was a very pleasant one. The rooms had all the amenities we required and the beds were comfy and clean. The breakfast was superb... More

Summer Sale, it said on the website. Having stayed at De Veres before and had fantastic experiences it NEVER crossed my mind to check out TripAdvisor, as the line uttered by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman "big Mistake, Huge Mistake". Manager makes a plausible excuse, sold site, no investment, English Heritage to blame. Rubbish! 70 Rooms All Booked! We were... More

This place is a bit of a conundrum. It has so much going for it, yet deVere has chosen not to invest in the accommodation and grounds since, well... for decades it seems. We booked in a hurry a long time in advance but read the reviews before arrival(!), so expectations were low. However, we really, really enjoyed our stay,... More
