We spent 2 nights at Hartwell on a special offer break for half term. We were upgraded to a Royal Double room in the main house which was lovely. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, service was good and the food was delicious. We used the pool facilities in the spa which were also very nice. Our only criticism... more

We went to the refurbished cafe/bar in the spa. The food was good, as was the service. What was off-putting were the 8 people in their 'robes' (aka dressing gowns). I don't know of any other cafe or bar, that is open to the public, where guests are allowed in wearing this sort of clothing. I appreciate that people having... more

Booked a one night stay at short notice for a treat for the wifes birthday. Only wish we had stayed longer or took advantage of going early and making a full day of this fabulous building and what it has to offer. It's great to see a building of this beauty being kept in such good condition. All the staff... more

My partner & I wanted a special place to stay for our wedding night & after much looking around & pre-viewing we booked Hartwell House for 2 nights. A little bit old fashioned in terms of decor for my tastes but that was clear in the website so I knew what to expect. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the spa treatment was fab, the pool area nice and the food good. All in all a nice break if a little pricey. We were given an upgrade... more

We went to the restaurant for a special meal, but were VERY disappointed. We had the 'Taster Menu' which was around £70 per head without drinks, but we expected that. The coures were quite small but the worst thing was that everything had been precooked and reheated. I had a dish of cooked beef - cooked, but cold - which... more

We decided to go down to Oxford as we hadn’t been for years. Looked into which hotel to book but couldn’t decide, a friend then suggested Harwell House, he said it was just half an hour drive and he couldn’t recommend it enough, so we booked a room there. After a long day getting reacquainted with the sights in Oxford... more

Hartwell is a magnificent country house hotel and a wonderful place to stay, but the restaurant is really poor. It's such a shame because the house deserves something so much better. What an opportunity for someone to take over the kitchen and turn into a top class operation. I know we are not on our own in this view. I... more

My husband and I stayed in the hotel and thought it was fantastic. Food and service was first class. We were given an upgrade to our bedroom which was totally beautiful with magnificent views of the grounds. The house is outstanding with so much history available. We went for a walk in the grounds, this was great. We made good... more

From reading some of the reviews on here, it is quite clear that some people have completely missed the point of this place - it is not a Hilton, nor a Crowne Plaza - you won't get brand new state of the art rooms......what you do get is a glorious stately home which is as original as possible in a... more
