We decided to go down to Oxford as we hadn’t been for years. Looked into which hotel to book but couldn’t decide, a friend then suggested Harwell House, he said it was just half an hour drive and he couldn’t recommend it enough, so we booked a room there. After a long day getting reacquainted with the sights in Oxford... more

Hartwell is a magnificent country house hotel and a wonderful place to stay, but the restaurant is really poor. It's such a shame because the house deserves something so much better. What an opportunity for someone to take over the kitchen and turn into a top class operation. I know we are not on our own in this view. I... more

My husband and I stayed in the hotel and thought it was fantastic. Food and service was first class. We were given an upgrade to our bedroom which was totally beautiful with magnificent views of the grounds. The house is outstanding with so much history available. We went for a walk in the grounds, this was great. We made good... more

From reading some of the reviews on here, it is quite clear that some people have completely missed the point of this place - it is not a Hilton, nor a Crowne Plaza - you won't get brand new state of the art rooms......what you do get is a glorious stately home which is as original as possible in a... more

We've just returned from 2 nights at Hartwell House. Having been National Trust members for a number of years, this really was a chance to stay in one of those beautiful old country houses weve walked around . Our bedroom, the tapestry room, could easily have been one of those weve had guided tours of in the past even down... more

It was my birthday and a year to the day since my other half and I got engaged, so, having been working all hours under the sun since Christmas, we decided that a getaway was in order. We had some virgin vouchers that friends bought for our engagement present last year so felt that using them for a night away... more

It was a perfect day on Saturday - even the weather could not have been better. We enjoyed our walk in the beautiful grounds before lunch. It was so nice to celebrate my eightieth birthday by having lunch in my favourite place. Many thanks to all those who looked after us so well in the Octagon Room and to the... more

Not surprised reviews are hit and miss for this hotel. It gets it right in so many ways and then throws it all away in other ways. For us the good points: Have stayed twice, not in the main house, which we have found very charming and good size rooms and decorations. The owners have a fantastic, well restored property... more

An architecturally beautiful building, set in stunning grounds, the communal areas and individual rooms are very attractively furnished and decorated and the grounds are impeccably maintained. We ate excellent food throughout our stay and used the spa and the tennis courts. The staff could not have been more helpful. more

En route from the east coast to Bristol with a day and a night to spare we decided to treat ourselves to a night of country house luxury. We checked that HH had available rooms on the required night but thought we would check it out by having breakfast before making the firm booking for the evening. Just as well!... more
