An architecturally beautiful building, set in stunning grounds, the communal areas and individual rooms are very attractively furnished and decorated and the grounds are impeccably maintained. We ate excellent food throughout our stay and used the spa and the tennis courts. The staff could not have been more helpful. more

En route from the east coast to Bristol with a day and a night to spare we decided to treat ourselves to a night of country house luxury. We checked that HH had available rooms on the required night but thought we would check it out by having breakfast before making the firm booking for the evening. Just as well!... more

Yes, Hartwell House is located in a truly idyllic setting. The drawing rooms are lovely. Some of the other areas, including most of the bedrooms, could do with a little work but one is willing to accept is as part of its idiosyncratic charm. When we stayed, we found most of the staff to be quite helpful but no one... more

My partner & I have stayed here 4 times in 2 years, and we like to think of it as our occasional refuge from London life. On three occasions we were in a standard room overlooking the croquet lawns, and on the most recent occasion I booked one of the royal suites as I planned to propose to her. It... more

I was lucky enough to be given a Gift Cheque for an Afternoon Tea for two at Hartwell House. We drove up to the impressive front door and were warmly welcomed into the Great Hall with its roaring log fire as our car was parked for us. We were shown to the Morning Room - a simply beautiful room with... more

It certainly is impressive as you drive up to the hotel but not to be greeted was rather surprising and to have to carry my own luggage in to reception even worse. The standard room was exceptionally large and had good views, but dated it is and yes cork tiles on the bathroom floor! Don't even ask for an iron... more

We found this gem purley by chance on our travels to London and after having a delicious lunch we decided to book two nights on our return from London. With our two children we were given rooms in the splendid courtyard area and the children enjoyed the use of the Spa pool which was available at certain times due to membersip... more

Having stayed when Pride of Britian were holding their AGM and the announcement that Hartwell had won Hotel of the Year, I can certainly understand why. We only stayed a few days and wished it could have been a bit longer. The grounds looked magnificient in the spring sunshine and the character of the hotel is second to none. I... more

I had not been back to Hartwell House for over 10 years, and now remember why. Yes, the house is beautiful and set in beautiful grounds but the proprietor and his behaviour towards myself and my children and our friends was quite unfathomable and deplorable. After checking online that hotel accepts children my friend phoned to double check that it... more

Management response from
Hartwell, Director & General Manager

This lady got very cross with many at Hartwell; our staff, our management, Spa members and other hotel guests. Most people have now recovered, and are moreover encouraged to believe that the authoress of these tirades is unlikely to return.

Wanted to view as a possible wedding ceremony & reception for 150 people. Telephoned to make booking & this was confirmed. Telephoned day before to double-check, also confirmed. Arrived on day, at correct time to be told there was nothing in their records to show we were due. We were then told it was too inconvenient for them to show... more
