Just stayed here for three nights and have to say what a fantastic place this is. Ideally located on Islay for ease of getting around and seeing whatever it is you're on the island for. Within hours of arriving and only a ten minute drive from the Old Excise House we'd seen numerous deer and a seal catching some rare... More

We stayed at the Old Excise house for 3 nights in July - just now getting around to our review (a Christmas card from Ron & Emma reminded me!) The location is perfect. Port Ellen is a drop off from the ferry and the Old Excise house is a few minutes drive. You can easily walk to Laphroaig distillery from... More

We've just returned from a long weekend on Islay, staying at the Old Excise House for 2 nights. Ron and Emma were great hosts, making our stay very enjoyable. Emma arranged all our visits to various distilleries in advance of our arrival, and booked us into a few of the better restaurants, and their local knowledge and guidance was excellent... More

I would strongly recommend The Old Excise House. The rooms are quiet, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bed was superbly comfortable, with a mattress topper and luxurious bed linen. The breakfasts, were delicious, especially the home baking. Emma and Ron provided a wealth of local knowledge with suggestions of places to visit and where to eat. Port Ellen is... More

The Old Excise House is, in my opinion, one of the best guesthouses anywhere! Ron and Emma are fabulous hosts, they make you feel like you are part of the family! Ron has a wealth of local knowledge and is passionate about Islay, and Emma's baking and cooking is out of this world! Ron even drove us all into town... More

Had a wonderful stay at the Old Excise House. Ron and Emma were very helpful with finding places to eat and getting around the island. The location was great for the primary purpose of our trip to Islay, whiskey tasting and touring. We were able to walk to Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg (all within 45 minutes) so as to partake... This was our first trip to Islay but will definitely not be our last. We were rather hoping the ferry would be cancelled on the way back so we could have an excuse to stay. Ron and Emma made us so welcome. The house is lovely, the bedrooms very comfortable and the food fantastic. The house is very close to... More

This is our third trip to Ron and Emma's guest house. We love visiting Islay and we just wouldn't think of not staying in The Old Excise House. Without being intrusive, Emma and Ron are able to make you feel immediately at home with the warmth of their welcome. If needed, they are always on hand to offer any advice... More

We knew we were in good hands when, while on the flight into Islay, a B&B review board member (who happened to be sitting in front of us) asked us where we were staying. When we said the Old Excise House, her remarks were ‘Oh fantastic! You’re going to love it. It’s so spotless you could eat off the floor.’... More
