We had a cosy room with a gorgeous ocean view. Wondeful relaxed atmosphere. The family that runs this cute place is great, they made our stay their unfoggetable! Our little son didn't want to leave this place. Neither did we! Highly recommended!!

Stayed here for a night looking for something simple and easy. Keep it simple like we say in nz. Booked through hostel bookers and paid a deposit. When I got here late, they didn't take the deposit off the balance when I said I had paid one .. I paid $3 online and $25 over the counter. Ok no big... More

Had originally planned for a single night's stay with a friend, but met such interesting characters that we joined forces and toured around the area with them and stayed an extra night. Everyone was just so open and friendly… simply amazing!

Stayed for two nights on separate occassions in September 13. Great little hostel. Very relaxed. Prices very reasonable. Place was spotless. Even the locals call in as it's the most happening place in town! Great place to stop to break up journey to Ucluelet or Tofino. Highly recommended.

I had a short stay in Port Alberni the Tuesday after a long weekend. After a HOT day in town and trip to a Lake, I wandered into the Fat Salmon and immediately felt at home. It was quiet and relaxed... and all I really wanted was to charge my phone and rest, so I enjoyed their small book loan... More

Fat Salmon is located in the highly underrated port alberni. Port alberni is cheaper than most areas on the island and is the perfect place to access the many other locations/activities in the area as well as the less well known local attractions. This hostel is really clean, has big dorm rooms, a well equipped kitchen and amazingly friendly staff... More

Fat Salmon owners are friendly and helpful. They even gave us a bigger room as we were coming off a trip and had lots of wet gear. The rooms are very basic and the matresses a bit on the old side, but we slept fine nonetheless. It is in a great part of town, close to the MV Rose port... More

I was on the train heading north from Victoria intending to get off at Nanaimo, but a tour director, upon hearing that I was a carpenter, suggested that I go a bit further to Qualicum Beach then head west to Port Alberni because they have the only operating steam-powered lumber mill in North America. I took her advice, but there's... More

I stayed at the Fat Salmon Backpackers several times when work in Port Alberni and inclement weather precluded me from returning home. The hosts went above and beyond the call of duty to make me feel welcome. In the summer they host barbecues for friends and lodgers alike on their front deck. There's no better place than the Fat Salmon... More
