It is hard to get to and you stay at the Lodge once you get there and have all your meals there. The way they seat you for dinner makes meeting other people regretably impossible. Very basic food and not much of it.

The Maquenque team picked us up in San José and took us all the way up in a minibus, then across the river by boat. We were the only two guests for 2 nights in this beautiful, natural eco-lodge. The cook, the owner, the guide really went all the way to fulfill any request we had. We loved the food,... More

After a long and adventurous drive on a bumpy street we were warmly welcomed and brought by boat to the hotel. There is were we found a little paradise, especially for nature lovers. As we travelled outside the season we were nearly the only guests and it was even quiteer than quiet. Nature out there is great, too. The staff... More

We have spend a great time in Maquenque! THE Staff was very kind, knew a lot about THE nature and we have seen more than 80 different birds, a lot of frogs, crocodiles and much more. THE accommodation and restaurant are very good. We will come back! Thanks Vicky, Julio, José and Staff!!!

Probably our favourite place in Costa Rica - really nice accommodation, friendly and helpful staff, great food and beautiful surroundings. The tours were all really enjoyable and our guides, Jose Luis, and his apprentice Serge, were very knowledgeable and interesting. The kayaking tour was probably the highlight of our entire trip, especially for reptile and bird spotting. We saw loads... More

Despite the gruelling 1¼ hour drive on an appalling unmade-up, pothole-ridden and rutted road, this was our absolute favourite place! Julio and his sister Vicki were wonderfully welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The location is absolutely gorgeous, and we loved being able to sit out on our verandah looking out over the lagoon with iguanas, amazing birds and... More

The trip to Maquenque was an adventure in itself, but it's hard to describe this little haven in the midst of nowhere. We drove to a river, then hopped on a boat to Maquenque. We mentioned toucans, only to have 3 species of these descend on the feeder. Hundreds of birds, and the jungle is right outside your window. Note... More

This family run lodge was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Everyone was so welcoming, kind and helpful. The lodge is beautiful and the surroundings are amazing. Loads wildlife, rain forrest and the river to explore with friendly and knowledgeable guides. Great hospitality, wonderful food. I can not recommend it enough. It is worth the journey!

We stayed for 3 nights in January 2015. This was our second trip to Costa Rica and this lodge was recommended by our agents in the UK. We have travelled on dirt roads in many countries and some are well-maintained - the 20 mile approach from Pital is not, with the whole surface full of pot-holes. The staff at the... More
