Several years ago The Helyar Arms had a good teputation. We arrived as a party of six and were greeted with by a very pleasant girl behind the bar. Drinks fairly expensive, but otherwise no problem. The menu was quite limited and items were unavailable at every course. The pan fried halloumi as a starter was excellent, main course OK... More

I read the reviews on here and they seem to be mixed. I like to give places and people a chance and see for myself so when my parents said they had booked for us all to stay I said nothing . We arrived 5.30pm, it was all locked up, not a soul to be found. A lady drove into... More

We arrived at 6.40 pm the bar was empty and cold, we sat at the window wth the sun coming though to warm us up. After looking at the menu we had Gravalax and halloumi starter. Unfortunately the Gravalax was just smoked salmon with none of the usual dressings of dill and sauce, hidden by lettuce. For mains 2 sirloin... More

The hotel is in an idyllic village and it is a lovely quiet area. we stopped as our halfway point down to Cornwall. the pub was nice and looks like it would be cosy in the winter. we stayed on a Thursday night and it was very quiet but the staff were very attentive and we didn't feel rushed as... Arrived early evening and had over friendly welcome - the bar was empty and chilly but we thought it would get busier/warmer as the evening progressed - wrong! Even thought the fire was burning away the bar never seemed to get warm. Bar area looked like it used to be a great food pub and plenty of prize plates on... More

We came here for our Christmas lunch 2014. Upon arrival we were shown to our table and battled at the bar for the poor solitary bartenders attention to get a round of drinks. The starters came followed by the main. We then waited 1 hour and 40 minutes to get our desserts. Needless to say by that time we were... More

How an owner can go on holiday and leave his staff to provide service without the necessary support beggars belief . Waited 70 mins for starters much of the menu was unavailable ,when arrived it was cold and way below an acceptable standard . 45 mins later the mains arrived ..total garbage on a plate . The only saving grade... More

We had lunch here today..a rather dreary January day . On entering the pub the first impression was of a strong & not very pleasant smell of hot oil. Also the room was very chilly despite the presence of a welcoming log fire burning brightly. Our meal was slow to arrive . There were only 5 other diners. However ,... More

Winter lunch date with friends. A real cosy restaurant with roaring fire. Lunch menu was nice and service was good. It was very quiet. There was ample parking. Took a while to find the pub signs in the village would help.

A charming, village restaurant with lots of character. With family coming from abroad and across the UK to the meal, we were hoping the service and food would not let the occasion down - and it certainly didn't. The food was excellent and the chef changed certain dishes to some of our family's requirements. Service was friendly without feeling pushy... More
