We had been booked in for months for a one night stay. No deposit was asked for. - should have smelled the rat then. We emailed 2 days before our visit which was not answered the smell increased. On the morning of our visit we received a short email to say that we could not stay - apparently some guests... More

This a beautiful pub in a lovely village. Quite a tranquil spot with a welcome team behind the bar. The beer was well kept and the food hit the spot. My wife and I didn't intend to eat. But when we spotted other diners with the house burger, we were immediately hungry. We ordered two, with a side order of... More

Went with friends recently for overnight stay. Assumed as there was no soap in the bathroom,to be an oversight. Not so. Apparently, they don't provide soap! Breakfast in the morning was a joke. The landlord appeared to be the only staff there. We waited 40 minutes for anything to appear on our table.....and I mean anything! There was no evidence... More

I had pre-booked a table for 1pm on Sunday for my family (7 people) and on arrival we were told that there was only one starter available - kidneys. Four of us ordered the kidneys - these took almost an hour to arrive. The young waitress apologised for the delay. The kidneys had not had the core removed and were... More

We are sorry that customers didn't experience our usual high standard of service and cuisine. However we are not prepared to tolerate rude and abusive behaviour to any of our staff. We appreciate all constructive criticism which is presented in the correct manner. In mitigation we were having difficulties with our chef who since then has been replaced. More

Myself and my partner stumbled across the Black pig. At a glance the building is phenomenal, which doesn't change when you enter the building. Lavished with black beams and a fire place, the cosy pub had a brilliant atmosphere. Myself and my partner picked up a menu, and was tempted by all of the food (Unfortunately we had to pick... More

Booked here due to a special offer and the need for a place to stay before setting off to catch a ferry at the crack of dawn the next morning. Lovely little pub, cosy and warm although a bit empty (admitedly, it was Wednesday night in February). Food was lovely. Ample portions, well cooked and we managed a BOGOF offer... More

The price was reasonable (out of season special offer) however it smelt like people where smoking in the bar (ok it was cold outside but family establishment/illegal?). I was given the wrong room from which I requested and I was locked in the morning!! The people that run the BandB do not stay on the site and I needed to... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The "Black Pig" at Staple - one of the most interesting public houses and satisfying restaurants in the area - is the only hostelry so named in Great Britain. This fact comes from licensed trade historian, Roy Denison. He has just been delving into the interesting past of the "Black Pig," where Philip Aunger presides. The "Black Pig" says Mr. Denison, was the last public house in Kent to brew its own beers. The Black Pig is a family run Inn, Freehouse, Restaurant & B&B; situated on the edge of the village of Staple, Kent. It is a fine old 15th Century, timbered building, with a large garden and ample parking. The building has a very interesting history, and was constructed from the timbers of local shipwrecks (Wrecked off the coast in the year 1588). ... more   less
