I was in Portobelo too wait for a boat to Colombia. There aren´t that many sleeping options in town. Captain Jack knows that. I found $13 expensive for the place. I nevertheless slept well, except for the friday night when I couldn´t sleep because of the super loud and very late music upstairs. The bathrooms were cleaned and I enjoyed the... More

'Treasure Island's Long John Silver was a pirate turned ship's cook, and if you step into this bar with its crow's nest view of the harbor you may think you have gone back to the days when Portobelo swarmed with buccaneers, and discovered where Long John Silver ended up. There is Long John - sorry, Jack - an imposing, craggy... More

Overall the place is horribly disorganized. The staff is mostly whoever wandered in that week and they have no clue whats going on (you wouldn't either if you had only worked there for two days). And I think calling it a hostel is quite generous. It's more like a bar with bunks in the basement. But its one of the... More

Captain Jack's has the most impressive cuisine in Central America. The menu has quite a large selection especially in view of the fact that this is also a hostel. The hostel is nice and very well kept. Everything is super clean. If you want to sail to Colombia book your sailing through Captain Jack's and you'll get a free night's... More

My husband and I ate here on a day trip to Portobelo and really enjoyed the food and terrific breeze from the deck. Definitely a locals place, full of character and good food. It's hard to find tofu dishes and Thai chili in Panama, but not at Captain Jack's. the beer and view are good too

Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by Captain Jack, his sidekick Jeff and staff. My stay at the famous Captain Jacks was thoroughly enjoyable and staff was available to help with any problems. The Caribbean upstairs bar and restaurant is a favorite hang out for locals and Captains of sailing vessels and travelers from all over the world. Captain... More

This place is pretty cool, with lots of character.. although in the words of Capitain Jack himself, "it's not for everyone." The bar is a good time, and seems to be very popular amongst passing sailors. The hostel itself isn't much more than a place to lay your head, and it's directly below the bar... So if heading to bed... More

The location is nice..and they have Wifi--> and that is basically everything that is nice about this hostel. The staff is NOT nice, some super drunk, others on cocaine. Beds r wrapped in plastic, so if you like to sleep on plastic, that it will work for you. But what I really didn't like was the attitude; there is no... More

We stayed at Captain Jack's for a night before leaving on a sailing trip through San Blas to Cartagena. We had a great time! The staff was friendly and helpful. Jack played all of our music requests, joined us for a few drinks and laughs, and even had the kitchen make a special dish because my friend was craving Mexican... More

Do not come here if you are looking forward to standard youth hostel with neat lockers, sterile hallways and staff that's doing their 9-5 thing. Captain Jack's is different. It's a vibrant pirate place full of old swords, stories and seamen's tales. A place where the sailers get a rest from the waves rocking their boats and recharging energy for... More
