The rain forest atmosphere and open air dining is fantastic. We gathered for breakfast at Captain Jack's around 9am. The staff was friendly and quick with our needs. There were a few locals and travelers there. The food was fresh, coffee great and the company offered interesting conversations. Our visit was short but one to remember.

I read the other reviews here about Captain Jacks and I partially agree and here goes: The accommodations are very 'budget' but you get what you pay for. It is a typical dorm and it can be smelly but that is due to the people who stay there. If your roommates do not shower, it will only smell like B.O.... More

Don't be deceived by the charming description on the homepage of this Hostel. It is nothing but a rathole. Once we arrived, we weren't even greeted and rather ignored. After we asked if there were beds available they (two volunteers) showed us the bed and asked for the payment right away. It wasn't busy at all. We were 2 out... More

Do not stay here if you can avoid it. It is overpriced ($US13 dorm room), cramped, the sheets and pillows are gross and the staff are surly and unhelpful. There are several bunk beds packed into each room but only certain beds have fans. The result is a cramped sweat box which could easily be avoided by the simple purchase... More

We stayed at this hostel the night before sailing to the San Blas Islands and it wasn't our best hostel experience. The dorm, although only for 4 people was dark, dingy and accessed through a larger dorm containing 6 other people. There were only two bathrooms for about 14 people and not enough fans. The bar area was fairly pleasant... More

My friends and I arrived in portobelo on a rainy night without reservations for a hostel. We arrived at captain jacks and were greeted by a friendly polish girl working there. We were told they were renovating the bar/restaurant up top. With limited options for accommodations captain jacks won by default. There was no common area, you had to sit... More

As soon as we arrived we felt at home! The hostel has a great atmosphere and we had the biggest laughs in the nice bar/restaurant Jack runs. The food was good, the drinks were cold, and the company amazing. The dorm is really basic, but suffices for a couple of nights. All in all a really fun place to stay... More

The hostel is as described... Don't expect anything more than what they tell you, and you will be fine. My only knock is that it is a bar, and the patrons of the bar can be very loud and restless into the wee hours of the night. But they advertise this, so it shouldn't come as a shock.

I was in Portobelo too wait for a boat to Colombia. There aren´t that many sleeping options in town. Captain Jack knows that. I found $13 expensive for the place. I nevertheless slept well, except for the friday night when I couldn´t sleep because of the super loud and very late music upstairs. The bathrooms were cleaned and I enjoyed the... More

'Treasure Island's Long John Silver was a pirate turned ship's cook, and if you step into this bar with its crow's nest view of the harbor you may think you have gone back to the days when Portobelo swarmed with buccaneers, and discovered where Long John Silver ended up. There is Long John - sorry, Jack - an imposing, craggy... More
