Although a little out of the way, we easily found St Briavel Youth Hostel. The staff were warm and inviting, but the best part was staying in a 14th century castle. We were lucky enough to stay in a family room on the second floor, AKA The Prison. Complete with creepy doors and floors and carvings from prisoners who stayed... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in Porter's Lodge - a 6-bed family room on the ground floor of the West Tower (on the right-hand side as you walk up the Castle Keep). All areas of the accommodation were clean and well-maintained. There was a good mixture of families, couples and solo travellers when we stayed. We travelled with three... More

One of the joys of staying with YHA is the kind of places you may find yourself sleeping in. From Elizabethan manor houses to Victorian mill-masters mansions to old lifeboat stations, the variety is endless. This though, tops the lot. Built by bad King John as a hunting lodge back in the 13th century, it is clearly a proper castle.... More

Stayed in Constables room, which is in the front right hand tower and is very atmospheric. Room was clean with wooden floorboards and a great view of the church opposite. We picked one of the rare Friday's when the were not having the medieval banquet but we had a lovely dinner of homemade stilton and broccoli soup, lasagne (with a... More

St Briavels is an amazing historic castle and an experince to remember. We hired the whole castle for a birthday weekend (54 people) It's brilliant for family and friends to get together. We opted for the full medieval experience, fancy dress and all. Hannah, Alex, Millie and Ross the historian actor were so good and the lovely chef put on... More

Our party of 4 stayed at St Briavels as part of an overnight ghost hunting event. The building is well looked after by YHA, and considering it's nearly 1,000 years old it's no surprising to see the work of later generations in keeping it in good order. There's still plenty of original features to see, including the original inscribed messages... More

I cannot thank St Briavels enough for an exceptional weekend. I organised a Hen weekend for 18 people in March 15. From the initial organisation and booking to the actual coordination of the weekend itself, the staff were helpful, supportive & communicative. The flexibility to be able to book the East tower for the weekend enabled a more private experience.... More

St briavels castle is lots of fun to stay in esp if you have kids. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the tour and medieval night. Great location as well. One thing to note is we were in the tower with very steep steps, and basic toilet facilities, nether which bothered us.

Stayed at this hostel with the kids who were delighted to be staying in a real castle, even more so that we slept in a family room that used to be King John's banqueting hall, had dinner in what was his bedroom, dressed up as knights and generally revelled in the medieval atmosphere! Staff were brilliant, offering archery in the... More
