This was a belated birthday present for me and it was fab. Lovely old building in pretty village, bags of character. Not stuffy, a real local. Tasty, reasonably priced food, nicely presented. Even had a world cup match playing in one of the rooms if you wanted to watch. We did! We were especially lucky with hot weather so had... More

We loved it. The four poster was wonderful, the pub food fabulous, the beer perfect - what more could anyone ask for. Oh .....a second night as we only stayed one night. Definitely on our list for a return visit.

Wonderful small hotel in a very old building. Comfortable rooms with a very nice bath. Good pub (food and drinks) with a remarkable bar keeper. Located in a quiet town in the north of dartmoor. Perfect place for visiting the surrounding area. What else can I say? Let Merlin the cat sleep on your lap for some time! Wish we... More

Very warm welcome, beautiful establishment. We stayed only one night but would loved to have extended our stay. Our room, the Chagford, was absolutely beautiful, thoroughly recommend! Simon, Lin and John were lovely and the resident geese didn't even wake us! Merl in is the owners cat, a good mouser I believe, what a character and master of the house!... More

We had to find somewhere close to Okehampton last thing on a Tuesday evening. Good Food app gave us this location and having called at 9.45 pm they not only had a room but offered to do us a late supper. We had such a warm welcome, a super chicken and avocado supper, a four poster bed and a super... More

If you like cosy and old, this place is for you. I am not a fan of starchy hotels and this fits the bill perfectly. We stayed for three nights with 2 year old in tow and were very well looked after (all organic baby requirements were fulfilled without complaint). The building itself is unique and full of character and... More

We stayed here in the Lustleigh room for 2 nights when in South Zeal for a birthday party. Our room was excellent and certainly a vast improvement on when we stayed there several years ago - the bed was especially comfortable. Breakfast was very good as was the service throughout. The only downside was my wife's meal on the Saturday... More

Good reviews prompted us to book this ancient hotel en route to Cornwall. Such a welcome from the lovely staff. Such excellent food which was reasonably priced and beautifully served in the unique restaurant (how often do you find a dining room complete with Standing Stone?). A comfortable bed and a beautiful garden all helped make our stay memorable. Just... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Oxenham Arms Hotel is one the most famous Coaching Inn Hotels in Great Britain. Totally unique in the world, it was originally a Monastery built by monks around a famous 5000 year old Neolithic Granite carved Standing Stone called the South Zeal Menhir. Located in South Zeal within the Dartmoor National Park, yet just 5 minutes off the A30 Dual Carriageway to Cornwall and Devon, South Zeal is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Devon Medieval Villages. The Ox provides wonderful bars, restaurants, acclaimed fine Gastro Pub food all set in lovely grounds and gardens in this 12th Century building once occupied by the Earls of Oxenham and Charles Dickens wrote some of his Pickwick Papers as a guest here when the Ox was a Coaching Inn on the original London to Plymouth Road. A true "Freehouse" Grade II* Listed Manor House, this privately owned hotel is one of the CAMRA real ale organisations listed National Heritage Inns of the United Kingdom. Open 7 days a week for food and bars you will find a lovely atmosphere, friendly welcoming staff and right on the edge of Dartmoor, you can walk from the garden following the Dartmoor Trail up to the Cosdon Beacon on Dartmoor. Close to the A30 Dual Carriageway and only 25 minutes from Exeter,20 mins from Chagford,35 mins from Tavistock, an hour and a half from Bristol, three and a half from London, just 10 minutes from Gidleigh, Castle Drogo or Fingle Bridge. For those staying for 1 or more days, the hotel provides a series of 5 walking guides to take you on the most beautiful scenic walks or cycling routes onto Dartmoor from 1 to 6 hours depending on the route. Novice to experience horse riding on Dartmoor can be organised starting just 5 minutes from the hotel. For those on their way to or from Cornwall or visiting Dartmoor, The Oxenham Arms Hotel is the perfect luxury room stopover. Sleep in a room where Charles Dickens once stayed, or another where Captain John Oxenham 14th Century Pirate and 1st Navigator for The English Naval Fleet once lived, another where 12th Century Benedictine Monks had their quarters, another where a Neolithic Prehistoric Standing Stone is beneath your superking bed...
