This is the rare spot where the other guests are as important to the experience as the accommodations. You meet some widely-traveled, highly-knowledgeable people--NGO staffers, scientists, journalists--and get some rare insights into life in modern South Africa. Highly recommended, especially as an alternative to the usual anonymous hotel.

Only got to spend two nights in this really lovely guest house -- wish I could have stayed longer. Comfortable, attractive space, delicious breakfast, and great company and conversation. Safe, eclectic, and entertaining neighborhood. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Johannesburg.

No major issues but also nothing outstanding either. The bedroom was clean but quite noisy from other rooms. Heidi wasn't there and I think this is the big difference in reviews. I've recently, once again, spent a week at this comfortable guest house and highly recommend it. The relaxed friendly atmosphere is enhanced by the fun gatherings over a glass of wine at sundowner time and its only a walk away from many excellent restaurants.

This was mine 10th stay at the Melville house. Mine boss allows me to stay during business trips in the "nice" Sandton hotels but for me there is nothing better then room 9 in the Melville house (and much cheaper).
