The staff has no regards for personal limits, they decided to move our clothing and throw it in another room (mixing everybody's belongings). Without even a heads up, stuff is missing and they are non responding. They couldn't even give us a phone call /email to allow us to move our stuff to the other room. We have stayed at... More

As first-time visitors to South Africa from the US, we were apprehensive about the security situation in Johannesburg after reading our guidebooks and hearing from friends who'd traveled there. We were glad to find Pension Idube as a home base for three nights and some day tours around Gauteng. The website was cheery and informative, and it seemed like Melville... More

Dear Vidiot42 Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your stay with us at Pension Idube. I'm so glad that you found almost everything was great. I must apologise for the computer not being working - it was hit by lightning (which we're famous for here in Joburg), and the poor PC got fried. What is... More

Great location, walking distance to Melville shops and restaurants and a safe walk. Parking and rooms were secure. Internet access was good and rates reasonable. Great value for money and rooms were always clean. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Only suggestion would be a rug on the floor of the room, as during our stay... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Pension Idube is a charming early-1900’s home in the leafy suburb of Auckland Park, 4 blocks from Melville’s trendy 7th Avenue with its cosmopolitan restaurants, bars, coffee shops, antique stores and craft shops. The Pension was one of the first backpackers hostels in Johannesburg and has been around for many years - we've now morphed to a fabulous budget B&B. Our fantastic guest reviews attest to our fantastic service at the some of the most affordable rates in Johannesburg. Our massive renovation and redecoration is almost complete, and we are well on our way to being hip-hop-and-happening, ready to welcome new and returning guests. All of our sun-filled rooms are being revamped, offering both the business and leisure traveller comfortable and clean accommodation. Our breakfasts are legendary, and are served around the pool during the summer months. We are in the ideal position for academic visitors to the University of Johannesburg and Wits (University of the Witwatersrand). We are a 5 minute drive from the SABC, Johannesburg CBD, Braamfontein, Rosebank and Soweto. Our guests have said that the Pension is a great base from which to explore the vibey Johannesburg and its surrounds! We are able to arrange tours, transfers and restaurant bookings - let us know what you need, and we’ll do our best to please! ... more   less
