We stayed only one night as a stop over before a flight. The private room was small but clean and there was bedding and towels. The walls are very thin so you can hear everything that goes on in the kitchen/lounge. Bring earplugs as there's a lot of noise from the street outside too. We went out for the evening... More

Located in a tiny historical house in the vibrant heart of Vieux Montreal, cosy, unconventional. Not at all the impersonal concrete & linoleum style you find in some other hostels. Much seems improvised, but all with a lot of heart and thought and creativity, so it feels homely and practical. Management usually isn't around when you arrive in the evening,... More

The staff was very friendly, and the room was nice. This is the type of hostel you want to stay in if you are looking for a quaint place in a nice area. You walk outside and you are in one of the best parts of Montreal. Read some of the chalkboard writing on the walls of the hostel to... More

Stayed in a private room so I expected some quiet and privacy, but all the people from the dorm area (2nd floor) come down to the 1st floor where all the private rooms are, because the kitchen and lounge are are on 1st floor. They stay there until 2am talking very loudly even though quiet hours are from 10pm to 8am,... More

I stayed in La Maison du Patriote in December 2012. It had a really relaxed vibe. It just oozed coziness. Located in the old part of Montreal, all the buildings in the neighborhood, including the hostel itself, were hundreds of years old, and very beautiful. Some nice restaurants, and it was located close to a very cool museum about the... More

I visited La Maison Du Patriote as part of a tour of east Canadian cities. It was by far the worst accommodation I've ever had. Dirty, cockroach-ridden, and cramped. But worse than all this was the noise; the hostel is opposite at club and there is no way to sleep before it shuts. When I tried to complain to the... More

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed at. I stayed with my niece in a private room facing the street and it was comfortable. The owners were nice and trusted us guests to take care of the hostel at night because they had to go home!! The lounge area was really cool with all the instruments. We were... More

I normally don't write reviews due my laziness, but I'm so shocked to see the negative reviews, that I felt the need to express the positive experience I had staying here and what a wonderful charming place this is! The Location - Right in the middle of Old Montreal, one of my favorite neighborhoods. The building itself has the historic... More

I stayed in La Maison du Patriote for two nights and boy was I glad to be heading out. More than 22 beds were cramped into what was already a very small hostel. Beds were practically touching one another with nothing more than a hanging sheet that separates them. While I didn't expect luxury and great comfort in a hostel,... More

Having stayed at some very nice backpackers' hostels in South America, where I had just arrived from, I was expecting more of North American hostels. La Maison du Patriote was a huge, huge, huge let-down. Although its location is incomparable (located right on one of the busiest and prettiest streets in Montreal), the hostel itself was a tremendous disappointment. The... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
