We were a big group booking a "room" at the Hostel, there were 10 of us. We booked out the whole room so we didn't disturb anyone. The joke here is that our room didn't have any walls or door. There were literally curtains that blocked us from the room across the tiny hall. We went to Montreal for Igloo... More

Hi there, Next time, give us a call (or email us) with your specific needs. We would have gladly suggested you the best option for a group, as we have plenty of options here. It's always possible to ask for a change upon check-in, we're always accomodating! But for that, you must come to see us, else we never know... More

I spent two (short) nights during the winter at this hostel. Had a good stay overall. Pros: - excellent location, lots to see around the hostel - helpful staff, with information and advice - common kitchen, nice and cosy - all you can eat breakfast for 5$ Cons: - the top beds are pretty high and not easy to access... A nice and quiet hostel, good for staying with friends. Nice kitchen to cook your own food. Cute decor and good music playing in the lounge. Clean bathrooms. Best of all: free coffee and tea every morning! Would stay here again if I'm ever back in Montreal.

I was here ten years ago and it was great then. It still is a great hostel in an excellent location. Clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Because it's a great hostel, it tends to attract great travelers too. I would be and am surprised by anyone who didn't/doesn't enjoy it. Sure, there's no lift and you have to walk up... More

Yeah good hostel on the whole, reviews here have made that pretty clear... they keep it very clean which is obviously good. Even the washrooms were clean. It's not a "dingy" hostel. I stayed on the top floor and the room I was in even had a pretty nice view of Rue Saint-Pierre. In terms of negatives, the Wifi I... More

My friend and I stayed here for one night. Got into Montreal early and we had no problem upgrading from two dorm beds to a private room. Located in Old Montreal in an old building, only negative was no parking but the staff was great to recommend different lots in walking distance. I ended up having to walk about 2... More

My husband, I and our adult daughter stayed at Auberge Alternative from Thursday, September 17 till Saturday, September 19, 2015. The staff were on top of their game. Even though there was a problem with our reservation the first night but they took responsibility and didn't charge us for our first night at all. It is the best hostel we... More

We stayed here for one night before embarking on a week-long cycling trip. We arrived at midnight and there was still someone there to check us in AND open up a storage cubby for our boxed-up bikes. This was much appreciated as there are no lifts and we would have had to carry the bikes up 5 flights of steep... More

I stayed here for one night between train trips. It was an easy walk from central station, easy to find, and in a great area of old Montreal. I booked the 6-bed female dorm, which I was glad for because the larger dorm room was just a giant, open space at the end of the hall with zero privacy. At... More

Very arty place with amazing location right in the old town (the place you want to be!) Great kitchen facilities with loads of free spices if you fancy cooking or easy access to loads of restaurants if you want to eat out. We stayed in a four bed room which I would recommend as it was very comfortable and was... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
