Wanted to make a nice quiet romantic night with my wife while we were visiting Montreal. After a search, came across this hidden gem in downtown Montreal. On our arrival the staff were extremely friendly and very nice. The hotel is in a building that's over 100 years old, but it was very clean and kept very well. It had... More

Other than the above everything else was meh....WiFi super slow and disconnected all the time. Hotel & rooms need some GOOD cleaning and update. Breakfast is free but not much to write home about. We were on the top floor of the second building. Those stairs were not fun when carrying luggage but not as horrible as I expected after... More

Beautiful old house turned into hotel. We were in room 101 advertised as family room. Very small two double beds with a lounge chair. Dirty stained carpets and stained ceiling. Single fibreglass shower with crack in floor held together with white duct tape. Shower very dirty. We were their for a music festival and could not find any other room... More

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Indeed, our historical building requires a lot of care. Over the last few years, we have been upgrading many of our rooms and will be addressing room 101 shortly (room 101 has two XL size double beds). We do our best to make these changes in a timely manner, while... More

Thank you for writing a review of your stay. We’re glad you enjoyed our hospitality. Unfortunately, we have researched the possibility of installing an elevator and found that the layout of the building makes it impossible to do so. We do our best to make sure our guests are informed about this before booking with us. We would also like... More

Friendly staff, very comfy beds, clean bathroom. A little rough around the edges in terms of quality of finish. Breakfast is alright, it's fine if cereal and toast in your thing, but the sausages were cheap and tasteless, which seems to be a recurring theme in these reviews. This place is great for a few nights. There was no bath,... More

If you like a boutique hotel in an old mansion then this is a good choice. It's close to everything yet still just outside of it, on a hill, a few minutes walk to Mount Royale, steps to McGill campus, and about three blocks walk to St. Catherines St. Even old Montreal and the Latin Quarter would be a 45... Hotel Ambrose is a small charming central hotel in Montreal, clean, with great staff. Nothing was too much trouble even to the loan of umbrellas and advice where to eat. Take a walk down Crescent Street and the choice is a difficult one to make. We would stay here again.

Nice room with plenty of size and a modern bathroom. Great location half a block off Sherbrooke one the west side of the McGill campus. That's far enough from the Old Port that you may want to take transit if you're going to that area, but it's close to other parts of downtown and to a couple of good museums,... More

Travel sites tend to rate the Ambrose with 2.5 stars or so, so you might think it's not that great. However, it seems that those sites are looking to check off a list of modern conveniences, and the hotel star count depends on how many check marks they get. Nobody gives stars for funkiness like you get at the Ambrose!... More

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighborhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
