We went to Montreal in the shoulder season (late October) and enjoyed our stay thoroughly. Ken is a wonderful and engaging host, who celebrates life, diversity and fine cuisine. The room was modest but quiet and comfortable. The real bonus here though is Ken with character to spare, helpful nature and the best breakfasts we have had at any hotel... More

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our holiday in Canada. Ken was a fabulous host, full of helpful advice and very welcoming. We enjoyed the best breakfasts we have had during our trip- delicious food and Interesting conversation about many topics. Rooms are comfortable, clean and no frills. A great place. Ken's fruit cake is a... More

We have just spent an amazing weekend in Montreal and not only because we love the city, but also, because Ken, made our stay so perfect. He is so welcoming, makes you feel at home. He makes the most delicious and filling breakfasts we have ever had in b&Bs, and his home-made pastries are out of this world! He also... More

If your idea of a B&B is a quaint, cutesy, countryfied inn with a standard breakfast, then you'll be in for a surprise when you arrive at this very unique property in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood of Montreal. Innkeeper Ken is attentive, and his knowledge and enthusiasm made him a wonderful host on our first visit to French Canada. He's clear... More

We enjoyed our stay here, but I can understand why some visitors were so dismayed. If you like quirkiness and a friendly, personal touch and understand that this is more along the lines of a hippified rooming house or hostel with private rooms than a hotel, you will probably really like it. Ken is very welcoming and helpful, breakfasts are... More

My husband and I stayed with Ken for our honeymoon in 2003. We were young and wanted to be in a low-key place where we could spend our time exploring Montreal. We had a wonderful time staying with Ken. He provided us with maps, advice, and even made reservations for us. Our second trip to Boulanger Bassin was this last... More

We stayed at the Boulanger Bassin for five nights in May and are still talking about it. Ken helped us feel at home, advised us on the sights to see when it started raining, and made us delicious breakfasts every morning. We stayed in the sunshine loft, which was fun (love the trapdoor) and private. The Plateau location is lovely,... More

Let me say this shortly: if you like to get ripped in overpriced hotels, unpersonal B&B's, basic breakfast and don't have a host who can tell you the ins and outs of beautiful Montreal .. then don't go to Uncle Ken's Boulanger Bassin :-) .. Me and my girlfriend had a very very very pleasant stay at Ken's B&B. Good... More

We stayed for two nights at the Boulanger Bassin on a last minute trip to Montreal, and it proved to be an excellent decision. Ken was there to greet us when we arrived and gave us lots of helpful advice on local restaurants and nearby sights. We stayed in the sunshine room which was light and airy, and ticked the... More

We stayed three nights at Boulanger Bassin, and I totally agree with an earlier reviewer who said this was "like staying with your cool uncle". Ken helped make us feel like we were in our home away from home. He welcomed us warmly on arrival and helped us with our bags (no mean feat given we were staying in the... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
