We stayed at the Gingerbread for 3 nights in June, 2023. Highly recommend it for the following reasons. The owners were very accomodating when we had to change the reservation. The city location is convenient for subway, restaurants and points of interest. There is a lovely park a half block down the street. The house is beautiful and very well kept. The room we stayed in, Frontenac, was large with a view of the street. There is a shared bathroom with another room, but the bathroom seemed brand new and the sharing aspect was not a problem. The brekfast served each mornnig was filling and tasty, with interesting conversation with the owners and other guests.

The location is awesome and the place itself is really organized and the cleanest we've ever seen. And the hosts are great! Where would you get a host that e-mails you during the day with more recommendations, tells you exactly where to eat - and remembers the most important part, that they only take cash? Thanks guys from David and Aylon

My wife and I had a wonderful three nights at Gingerbread Manor. We stayed in the Frontenac, a spacious room on the second floor with a shared bath just steps away. The bath is thoughtfully equipped with drinking glasses labeled for the occupants of each room as well as a good stock of band-aids, qtips, shower caps, and so forth. The plush robe in the bedroom and motion-sensor lights in the hall made late night trips to the shared bath very comfortable. 24-hour amenities in the dining room include a fridge with three shelves for guest use, ice, and hot tea (maybe coffee too.) There's bottled water and beer available for a nominal charge, and a "library" of wine (replace the bottle with one of similar value.) We really appreciated the simplicity of the electronic-keypad entry for both the front door and our room.

Had a wonderful stay here. Came for the formula 1 weekend. Great hosts and wonderful accommodation. We had the balcony room with the shared bathroom, and was no issue at all. Parked our car in the garage, and took the convenient metro just a short walk away. Will be back next year! Merci!

Manoir aux Pains d’Epices is fabulous. The structure and architecture is of late 19th, early 20th century design, and reveals a bit of quirky charm between its wooden floors and original ceiling trims and mouldings. This terrific Laval Street location is accessible to Vieux Montréal, museums, entertainment venues and McGill, for starters, as well as restaurants and cafés just a block or two around the corner, no matter which direction your feet and curiosity take you. But why go to a café when delicious breakfast offerings ~ including lots of coffee and tea, of course ~ are right under your nose at Manoir aux Pains d’Epices? Yves and Ephraim’s kitchen is set up in concert with a very capable chef (Ephraim) whose skills and willingness accommodates differing culinary needs. And Yves sets a beautifully welcoming table for you to enjoy whatever is on the morning menu! When I was ready to explore Montréal, I felt grateful both Yves and Ephraim possess the wealth of Montréal knowledge they do, along with an enthusiasm for sharing it: they helped me maneuver an unfamiliar city. When I made an unanticipated return visit to the city over a week later I was able to book a last-minute accommodation when they had an otherwise fully-booked house. I will definitely return to Manoir aux Pains d’Epices if they have space for my next Montréal visit! It is a really FUN “find”, owned and operated by two wonderful hosts!

Cute place with very chatty and informative hosts. Lots of stairs so if you find it difficult to climb stairs be warned :-) Beautiful 19th century townhouse with tons of original details; beds are comfortable and bathrooms clean and well kept. Great location just off Sherbrooke and Saint Denis, so it's close to public transport (buses and Metro). Highly recommended for your stay in Montreal.

Location was good and about 2 blocks to metro station. Home was very nice and clean. Bedroom was very clean with a comfortable bed, fresh bedding and lots of towels. Not good for anyone with mobility issues due to amount of stairs to be climbed to the 2nd and 3rd floors where bedrooms are. I have stayed at many bed and breakfasts and always received excellent food. On this stay, breakfasts were, I will kindly say, not good. Served a vegan breakfast one day which was a potato frittata made with tofu instead of eggs. It was grey slime on a plate. Awful. The best breakfast were very small pancakes. However, we were each only given a few tablespoons of syrup to go with it. They should be more generous with their Quebec syrup as it is very good. Bagels were not fresh and they charge $5.00 for jam. Who does that! Wouldn’t stay here again solely based on the food.

Response from Yves Berube, Owner at Gingerbread Manor Bed & Breakfast
Responded Nov 6, 2022
We are sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. We serve a variety of breakfasts and sometimes have to cater to the dietary restrictions of other guests as well, hence the vegan frittata. We are sorry that you did not enjoy it. As for the syrup, why did you not just simply ask for more syrup (instead of going home and writing it on the Internet, weeks later?) The jam on the table is clearly complimentary as we charge $5 for 250ml take-home jars... Who would assume that a little individual serving of jam would be $5, when we are so generous with everything that we serve?

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights. We were very happy to park our car in a secure and safe garage. We could easily walk to the basilica and waterfront and the plateau neighborhood is loaded with restaurants. Our room had a private bath but we heard the adjacent bath being used which meant a disturbed sleep. Having been an innkeeper myself, perhaps I am a bit critical, but I thought the breakfasts could have been better. The fruit offerings were meager at best. The fruit in the fruit basket was past its sell by date. We would have preferred if our host was bit more professionally dressed. There are a lot of rules in this place. If you oppose to taking your shoes off or not being able to enjoy a snack in your room, perhaps another place would suit you. The only common area is the dining room. The parlor is really for the hosts use. But overall, I would rate this place 4 out of 5 for the value given. We don’t like to spend a fortune on hotels and you do get a lot of bang for your buck here.

Response from Yves Berube, Owner at Gingerbread Manor Bed & Breakfast
Responded Aug 28, 2022
We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. But let me clarify a few things. We keep a small selection of fruit in the basket because it can go bad so quickly and attract fruit flies, had your requested, we would have offered and/or replaced what was in the basket. As is the law in Quebec, the B&B is our home. We both wear polo shirts and pants or shorts. We are sorry that isn't professional enough for you, but we also want to be comfortable in our home. We have asked the housekeepers to wear a frilly French maid uniform, but they refused (and laughed.) We want everyone to feel comfortable and that includes guests not having to dress up for breakfast either. We ask that people take off their wet shoes, though yes, as most Canadians, we prefer that people don't bring their shoes into the house, since their shoes have walked through the contaminants of the streets, where the animals have used the sidewalks and the cars have left their residues. We also provide slippers for those guests who want them. It is common practice in Canada to remove your shoes at the door. We have no rules that prevent guests from eating in the rooms. We simply ask that guests don't use the garbage cans for food trash for two reasons. Firstly, the bugs and smell can be problematic. But more importantly, the city has mandated the usage of composting in our neighbourhood and we can be fined for food being in the trash. All we ask is that guests bring their food related trash down and leave it on the kitchen counter, where we will deal with it. We don't want to have to go through guest trash looking for banana peels, etc. We are in a residential neighbourhood and therefore must compost. The dining room, living room and the outdoor terrace are all guest spaces. We have our own private spaces.

We stayed three nights at Gingerbread Manor and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had an en-suite bedroom on the second floor which was spacious and comfortable. Every morning we had a different delicious breakfast - beautifully presented. Thank you so much. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Montreal.

This was a great B&B that is central to most of the main tourist areas of Montreal. We stayed in the de Maisonneuve room on the top floor. It was comfy, clean and quiet. The home is beautiful with modern amenities, but much of the classic Victorian finishings remain. The hosts were great and made the experience seamless. Breakfast every morning was different than the last and gave us a good start to our day. We especially enjoyed the delicious omelettes made for us on our last morning! Would definitely stay here again.
