I stated 1 night at St John's city hostel. I booked a 4 bed mixed room thru Internet. I wrote to the hostel if it was OK if I was checking in at around 1am because my flight was landing late. I had a reply by Dave Barron saying it wasn't a problem at all. I came in that night & the person in charge was obviously drunk. He asked me if I could pay for the night right & I told him it wasn't a problem. I wanted to pay by debit but he didn't knew how the machine was working. He asked me if I could pay cash & I said sure as long as you can me a receipt which he replyed he didn't how neither. So he told me I could come back in the morning.
At 9am the next morning nobody was around but the office was open. I left a note with a $20 ($28,80 was remaining on my bill) as I didn't had any other bills.

I stayed two nights last week at City Hostel, 8 Gower Street, in St. John's. Private room w/private bath, facing the back of the building and overlooking the neighbors' gardens, was $58 CAD and an excellent choice for my travel dollars. Free internet, free laundry facilities, common kitchen area, located on a quiet steet at the intersection of Gower and Military. A small grocery store is just a short walk, and I was also able to walk from the hostel's location to Water Street. FYI...The City Hostel's other location at 243 Duckworth Street is closed. Dave, the hostel keeper extraordinaire, was helpful in providing tips for sightseeing, ways to get around and other tourist type info. This was my first experience in a hostel and it was great - I am a 48 yr. old female and did not feel out of place with the other guests. I would definitely stay here again.
