I highly recommend the HI-City Hostel. It is quiet, close to downtown, and very clean. The value is unbeatable. Also, the front staff were awesome. They helped us rent a car when there wasn't one to be found in the entire city.

It is a great place to relax and unwind. It is clean and the people are wonderful! The rooms are not over packed. even though it is a big hostel. Good insulation in most rooms. Location wise it is great. Everything is walkable distance. The bus stops are very close too. I did my grocery shopping from Dominion, but there... More

A clean, safe location, within walking distance to everything downtown including Signal Hill. Busy place, well kept, good staff. Rooms at the front do get some street noise but that's typical city and not the hostel's fault. Spent 5 nights here, wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Clean, great location, comfy and very friendly staff. The perfect hostel for a perfect city. One suggestion - family rates should be a bit more reasonable. $130 for a family of four is not what I would call inexpensive.

Having stayed at this Gower street hostel in previous years, I knew it would be a great place to introduce my niece to the youth hostel experience. I was, once again, pleased with my stay there and she absolutely loved it. This year, I stayed in room 3, which faces the rear of the building. Roomy, clean and bright, it... More

I haven't enjoyed such amenities and cleanliness in a hostel in years. I actually stayed in the hostel's new building at 31 Gower, which was a house they had recently purchased. The rooms are HUGE -- they didn't have any furniture, but a lot of space and a dope view of the harbour out my window. The beds were comfortable,... More

I stayed at the City Hostel twice - at the beginning and end of a trip around Newfoundland. The first time was excellent, I had a private room with a bunk bed all to myself on the upper floor with a view of the harbour. It was great! On my second stay my room, which was unfortunately wedged between the... More

This was my first trip to Newfoundland and I was welcomed by a friendly staff member when I arrived at the hostel. It was a quick check in which gave me more time to find somewhere to eat. The staff is always friendly & ready to assist with any request that people staying at the hostel might have. The staff... More

Who: Teachers, bankers, anthropologists, wanderers crossing Canada, business people, moms and dads are amongst the diverse people you might encounter in this hostel. You'll meet people just like yourself- looking for great value, comfie beds and service with a smile. The bonus is that you get all that as well as the opportunity to meet some really fun other travellers... More

I regret having only the one night in St. John's, but am very happy I got to spend it in the hostel on Gower St. I'd been visiting relatives for almost a month in Hearts Content on the Avalon Peninsula and had been to the city twice while there, so more or less knew the layout of the city. Within... More
