The Sylvia is great value for money in a lovely location. Enjoyed long beach walks on English Bay right outside the door. Enjoyed beverages with a good friend in the iconic bar. And most of all, enjoyed all the lovely canine guests coming and going through the lobby. It is not a fancy hotel or a particularly up-to-date hotel in... More

Yes you are correct we are a pet friendly hotel and have been since 1960. I believe we are still the only hotel in the city that does not charge extra for pets when other charge $25-$35.00 per night per pet. The lounge was the first in the city and has great cocktails and views of English Bay. Thank-you for... More

Location is excellent, beach, Stanley Park, Denman Street & within walking distance to Robson Street & downtown Vancouver. One of the older, original hotels in Vancouver. Don't expect ' newly renovated" or updated but has more of the European charm of an older hotel. Restaurants & pub downstairs with great food. Can't beat the location. An excellent alternative to the... More

An historic, comfortable hotel with a cosy lounge, excellent dining facilities all facing the famous English Bay in Vancouver. Service relaxed, friendly, just like family! A block from well known Denman Ave. with excellent ethnic restaurants with food from all over the world. Best of all, one block from entrance to amazing Stanley Park. If you are coming to Vancouver... More

Participated in DineOut Vancouver for the first time, and chose the Sylvia Hotel just for its fantastic location. Boy, were we pleased! Newly re-furnished. Quiet hotel and location! And the dinner at the restaurant is superb. Try the lemon tart. Really.

We'd heard about the Sylvia for years and finally slipped away on the MLK weekend for 3 nights in a king room. Price was very favorable in US$. Staff was friendly, cheerful and very helpful. Room was what you'd expect for an older historic hotel: great bed, ample hot water, even had a tub, couch and chairs, modern windows, free... More

Thank-you for all your kind words about your stay, sorry to hear that you were towed. Yes the price of parking is much cheaper than being towed plus our rates are so much less than most hotels in the area. I will pass along your comments to the food and beverage department as they will like your comments about their... More

We don't stay anywhere else when we go to Vancouver (3-4 times per year). Located right on English Bay on the seawalk, you can walk everywhere. Built in 1912, it was originally an apartment building so, has suites with living rooms and kitchens. North, you are blocks away from Stanley Park and south, you can circumnavigate False Creek (about 15... More

Good value for the location. Old growth ivy grows up the exterior facade of this historic iconic Vancouver Hotel. Inside there is a very small bar area, and restaurant. The room key is keeping with the style of the hotel, one key, its bulky, it's turned into the front desk when you leave your room. Well known story that the... More

Thank-you for staying with us and sharing your thoughts. We are not a chain hotel and do not try to be like them. Most people enjoy the differences and appreciate the heritage site and character of the Sylvia Hotel. Our location is mentioned often because of the convenience of being downtown in minutes and Stanley park a short walk away.... More

As the title says, this hotel is directly across from English Bay, and only a block from Denman St., which offers all the food you could ever want to eat. The hotel retains all it's historic charm, but still offers the modern amenities we are all accustomed to. If your looking for a place where you can park the car... More

Dogs had a great overnite. Their eyes were popping like toddlers and they wouldn't go to sleep. They discovered that men there bring ham to the door on plates. And then they get to walk Stanley Park. PROS • Great location, The hotel is right across from the water, next to Stanley Park and around the corner from downtown shops and restaurants. • Clean room. • Our room had a walk-in closet but I don’t know if that is standard. • Friendly and helpful desk staff. I am sorry that you do not understand that all room rate by all hotels around the world list their prices with taxes and fees extra. This is not something that the Sylvia does, it is common practise. As for the parking, we only charge $18.00 per night (plus taxes) when all other hotels in the area charge $25-$45 per... More

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.
