We absolutely loved Mesón del Alférez. The rustic beauty was delightful and peaceful. The meal we had at the hotel's restaurant was superb. The atrium is lovely with plants and flowers. I am going back in November!

After 8 years, I found everything very much the same: superb central location, friendly and helpful staff, colonial charm, excellent restaurant. Be aware that walking Xalapa involves climbing, so being close can be important. Other highly-rated hotels are quite a distance from downtown - some too far for a comfortable walk. This hotel is convenient.
Again, as is often the...

We travel to Xalapa several times a year and have found our home-away-from-home in El Meson de Alferez. This charming, nicely renovated hotel still holds tremendous colonial charm. Our family of four fits very comfortably in the suites which consist of a comfortable main floor (queen bed, bathroom and small sitting area) and a large loft with a another queen...

Xalapa does not boast a large stock of great hotels in the centre of the city. There may be good reasons for that. The centre of Jalapa is noisy with traffic and the real attractions are outside the historic district anyway. Nonetheless, the Meson del Alferez does a decent job of providing basic comforts. The hotel has retained kept the...

I did not "stay." I lived at Meson de Alferez for three weeks while guiding a student exchange with the University of Veracruz, which is associated with this hotel.
I had no problems with my room or the staff, although my first room assignment was too small to live in for three weeks. The hotel changed it in minutes. Be...

Once again our Lonely Planet took us to a nice place, this time Meson del Alferez. We needed a single and a double room and one of the staff members showed us several (nice) rooms. The double room had a living room, bathroom and upstairs was the bedroom. The single room was nice, clean and spacious too.
Breakfast was included....

NO heat and NO a/c but a wonderful hotel in the middle of the shopping district, one block from the Cathedral, and one block from the most beautiful main park of any Mexican city I have visited. Rates are very reasonable. Very small hotel---I was told 22 rooms. Excellent service. The restaurant below the hotel is noted as being one...

An old-fashioned little hotel just a few blocks from the main plaza, with very reasonable prices. Just don't expect first-class accomodations. It's made up of a series of small rooms around a courtyard. I looked at a number of rooms before choosing mine. Most are dark, and ventilation can be a problem. Chances are, your window will open right onto...

Xalapa Mexico: Meson Del Alferez: “A disappointing experience"
After reading the fine reviews on this hotel on Trip advisor and in Fromers, we were very sadly disappointed. The property is not well maintained, and the actual rates at the hotel are much higher than most reviewers quoted. The rooms we were shown were all in a similar condition, neat and...

There may be other charming hotels in Jalapa, but we didn't see any- they all looked like dreadfully dreary "modrn" boxes. The Meson del Alferez had simple clean rooms and a charming antique feel. The restaurant downstairs is only open for breakfast and dinner, but from the looks of the clientele, it is a favorite with the city's professionals. there...
