I did not "stay." I lived at Meson de Alferez for three weeks while guiding a student exchange with the University of Veracruz, which is associated with this hotel. I had no problems with my room or the staff, although my first room assignment was too small to live in for three weeks. The hotel changed it in minutes. Be... more

Once again our Lonely Planet took us to a nice place, this time Meson del Alferez. We needed a single and a double room and one of the staff members showed us several (nice) rooms. The double room had a living room, bathroom and upstairs was the bedroom. The single room was nice, clean and spacious too. Breakfast was included.... more

NO heat and NO a/c but a wonderful hotel in the middle of the shopping district, one block from the Cathedral, and one block from the most beautiful main park of any Mexican city I have visited. Rates are very reasonable. Very small hotel---I was told 22 rooms. Excellent service. The restaurant below the hotel is noted as being one... more

An old-fashioned little hotel just a few blocks from the main plaza, with very reasonable prices. Just don't expect first-class accomodations. It's made up of a series of small rooms around a courtyard. I looked at a number of rooms before choosing mine. Most are dark, and ventilation can be a problem. Chances are, your window will open right onto... more

My husband and I were skeptical after reading negative commentaries on this property. In spite of it we gave it a try and we werent dissapointed. This hotel is unlike large chains that offer standarized settings is a unique property. The rooms are clean and spacious and the service is excellent. We stayed in a suite with a cozy second... more

Xalapa Mexico: Meson Del Alferez: “A disappointing experience" After reading the fine reviews on this hotel on Trip advisor and in Fromers, we were very sadly disappointed. The property is not well maintained, and the actual rates at the hotel are much higher than most reviewers quoted. The rooms we were shown were all in a similar condition, neat and... more

There may be other charming hotels in Jalapa, but we didn't see any- they all looked like dreadfully dreary "modrn" boxes. The Meson del Alferez had simple clean rooms and a charming antique feel. The restaurant downstairs is only open for breakfast and dinner, but from the looks of the clientele, it is a favorite with the city's professionals. there... more

We had great difficulty finding this place (driving into town without directions), but were so glad when we did. The hotel had secured parking available for us. We had a choice of rooms... the more expensive room was bigger and quieter, for about US$55. The cheaper room (about US$33) was smaller and noisy (noisy only at peak traffic times), but... more

This little hillside inn is a former colonial mansion, authentically restored and located a block below the main plaza in the historic center of Xalapa. While the rooms are modest and somewhat sparely furnished, the prices are reasonable and staff is friendly and accommodating. An additional advantage is the restaurant located on the lower floor, which serves excellent breakfasts and... more
