We were at Casa Chips 20 years ago and it was still amazing as we remembered. Casa Chips is a super convenient location for all your Barra stops. The staff was knowledgeable of the area and helped us with all of our questions. My husband and I cannot wait to go back with our family!

Lost track of how long we stayed in Unit 7, the top floor of Casa Chips. If you are expecting the Hyatt Regency or Four Seasons, Casa Chips may not meet your standards. Room is more than adequate, and very comfortable. The air-conditioner was "iffy", but Martin exchanged it for a better one when I mentioned the problem. A large Cyclone fan will whip up as much air in the room as an Oklahoma tormado if that is your thing.
Noise? Well, hey, you are in Mexico! The bar downstairs does put out a few decibels, but nothing compared to the new hotel adjacent, the Alondra Hotel, a quasi-high rise with an open bar at the top with music tht spills down on Casa Chips. Problem? No, it was'nt. The air-conditioner humm plus the B17 noise from the Cyclone fan drowned out the Alondra Hotel.
Still, location could not be better. The on-site management provided every need and met every request. The Alondra Hotel does provide a good ice cream shop, a hair dresser, cold beer at the roof top bar and a computer services center. Didn't see the alondra rooms -- too pleased with Casa Chips.

We stumbled upon this little jewel of Mexico by accident. After an internet booking feasco we ended up in Barra de Navidad by traveling with friends who have heard of this small out of the way bay just north of Manzanillo. We were just looking for an overnight stay, but upon seeing the units we ended up renting for a week. We were very impressed by the owner Craig and his on site manager, Martin who spoke fluent english. The town of Navidad is a small, friendly fishing village of only 1500 people or so. We have been to Mexico many times but have never felt so safe and relaxed walking around this little town and it's neighbouring village of Melaque. We have finally found a place in Mexico that we plan to go back to again and again. Prices of rooms in the area vary greatly, anywhere to just $30.00 American to $200.00 American. Most are in the $70.00 to $125.00 range. Not for people looking for all inclusive vactions, but for those looking to "relax"

We stayed at Casa Chips for a week and loved everything about it/ Nice managers, very helpful and just lovely people. The restaurant/bar on the main floor and right on the beach, run by Marco was a great pit stop each afternoon - food great, good prices. We had the top floor of this three story, seven room hotel, so we looked right down at the sand and the water, and went to sleep at night listening to the pounding surf. The room has a full kitchen, king sized bed, nice modern and very clean bathroom, and lots of Mexican character. We noticed, however, that the price was one of the highest of all the places we checked out in both Barra and Melaque, so moved to another place in Melaque for our second week, which wasn't as nice, a lot noisier, but less than half the price. We'd go back to Casa Chips, but now that we know the price is a little high, we'd try to negotiate a better rate than $100 U.S. a night!

Please note that the following review is specifically for the room we were unfortunate enough to book - room #6. Also note that most other glowing reviews are for the two rooms that face the ocean.
We were required to pay the full amount upfront for all three of the nights that we had planned on staying there. After we arrived at the hotel, we realized why - if we hadn't payed $330 for the three nights, we would have just turned around and left. The hotel web site made it appear that our room would have ocean views and ocean breezes. What we found was a room that faced a very busy street and the breezeway that the web site calls a "patio." This breezeway is used to cook smelly food at all hours of the night, filling the room with an overwhelming burning food smell. The cars that drive by sound like they are right in the room. The "wraparound balcony" has a lovely view of the parking lot (or a junk yard) next door and a glimpse of the ocean.
The shower came with a plunger and after our first shower, it was easy to see why. It filled up to our ankles after 3-4 minutes. The fan clanked so much that the former occupants of the room had wrapped the pull cord in toilet paper to keep it from hitting the glass dome. By the time we got there, the toilet paper had worn quite thin! The pillows felt like they had been filled with parboiled potatoes.
After two sleepless nights and nostrils full of greasy food smells, we decided to forgo the $110 and left a day early. In all fairness, our experience might have been completely different if we had one of the ocean-facing rooms.

We stayed at Casa Chips in Barra de Navidad at the tail end of November and early December 2006. It is a tiny hotel of 5 rooms. The two rooms facing the ocean (2nd and 3rd floors) have lovely LARGE balconies that run the width if the building and are equipped with tables, chairs and lounges and are set back about 40 ft. from the shore. Needless to say, it's all about the pristine view. Directly below is the beach restaurant (umbrellas and tables on the sand) where you can sit all day long. Calm waters here so the swimming is great. I only saw the two ocean view rooms which were enormous and colorful with kitchenettes and two comfortable King beds. There is nice hand-carved wood furniture, A/C and TV. The 3rd floor unit has a Jacuzzi and is a little more sexy altho I thought it was kind of cut up and preferred our 2nd floor room. The ceilings are brick domes and are quite dramatic. The food is standard but not an issue since Barra is packed with great restaurants and coffee shops. The hotel bar has delicious, fresh blended Margaritas. Barra is a funky little town set out on an ocean peninsula--maybe what Playa del Carmen was 25 years ago (but much smaller). Don't expect American style luxury here; it's a strictly Mexican scene which is what makes it great. Our room was $110 pesos per night which was worth every nickle because of the ocean view. Walk every where and eat at Isadora's ( owned by Jan, a charming female restauranteur from San Francisco who spends half the year in Barra and the other half at her restaurant in S.F.) Hotel management was friendly and helpful.

This is a lovely little bouquet hotel. Safe and secure. It is Mexico and it is a smallish beach side town. There is a nice restaurant downstairs or many other options around town. If you want an affordable, laid back and relaxed experience Barra and Casa Chips is the place is for you. Perfect? No. Perfectly adequate? Yes.

This remodelled building is in one of the best locations in Barra. We stayed a month in the Sky Master Suite and were very impressed. It was our second time. The stove and cupboards had been replaced, plus there were new pots and pans.

The managers, Damien and Iris, were very friendly and provided for our every need.

We loved being close to the ocean and within easy walking distance of restaurants and other amenities.

After reading the reviews and knowing the area, Casa Chips delivered exactly what we expected. It was our anniversary and I wanted to find something a little special. Something with a nice view, privacy and comfort. Seeing that the owners where American i knew we could expect good value for our money. As we live in Manzanillo we know very well how somethings don't deliver what they advertise. I made my reservations by contacting the email provided on the website, quick reply with the appropriate information requested. i made a deposit (as per the norm in Mexico) and scanned the verification and returned an email. Again quick reply and all was good, or so i thought. When arriving the front desk personal had no information regarding our reservation, she simply told me the room that i wanted was available and how much it would be for the night. Lucky it was a Monday, the room was available and i had my deposit receipt.
Ok, time for constructive criticism.
1. The kitchenette seems to be an addition to the original building and there is a gap where the two roofs meet, not a big deal except for the birds that lived in the gap, thus birds and poop on the kitchen floor in the morning. Upon inspection, it looked like someone had once tried to fix the problem by placing a piece of cardboard in the gap.
2. The lower deck has some pieces of the railing missing, not dangerous yet, but we where drinking and could have been.
3. The master bathroom, the towels are old and need to be replaced, there are no beach towels, the toilet paper dispenser is loose and the roll falls off as soon as you go to grab some, the sign informing you to not to put your toilet paper in the toilet is taped on the wall (not a big deal, just looks bad, old tape has turned color and is peeling, wouldn't take much to have it in a frame). Last but certainly not least, the website says there is a double headed shower, not the case, there used to be a double headed shower, but not anymore and i probably know why, not enough water pressure, gravity fed water from the roofs water tank wont allow enough pressure for two shower heads to work at the same time. Also, there was not hot water, not a big deal for this time of year, since it is really hot and a cool shower is fine, but if it was during cooler weather i would not be happy.
4. There didn't seem to be any beach umbrellas and chairs for the hotel guests. There are photos of chairs and umbrellas on the web site, i just assumed that being a beach front hotel it would be something offered to guests.

I know there is a long list of nit picking. Nothing from the above list ruined our stay, we knew what to expect in sea side hotels, this is a step above most. We had a great time watching the sun set (well i did, the wife took a well deserved after noon siesta).
All in all, we will be back, if the owner/management reads this we would like to book again for the fallowing year. I saw that the owner had replied to previous guests reviews and would hope he still does, email me for my confirmation of next years reservation.
