My wife, her sister, and I spent three nights at the Barton Cross in late August 2014. We found it utterly charming, comfortable, clean, and quiet. Our host, Brian, was most helpful in explaining how to get from the hotel's rather remote location to several places we wanted to go without going through the heart of Exeter. The dinners were... Stayed here while working in the area - turning off the M5 at Cullompton you seem to travel down miles of narrow lanes then eventually find the middle of nowhere - where this old thatched hotel nestles ! Yes the decor is dated but it's full of old English charm - and you get a friendly welcome from the owner.... More

Beautiful and quiet environment! Cosy room! Warm and friendly hospitality! It's a fantastic hotel for anybody who just want a quiet holiday far away from city and crows. Old style but beautiful and clean properties. Small but lovely garden and huge harm nearby definitely add a lot credit to this hotel.

Although there are still plenty of signs of flooding it is slowly disappearing. Barton Cross has suffered a little but is still open for business . We had a warm welcome and a cosy pre-dinner drink in the well stocked but homely bar. Dinner was very good and an imaginative menu, scallops in a coconut curry followed by chicken breast... More

This is really a hidden gem for food near Exeter. Celebrating my mum's birthday this weekend with friends we had yet another fantastic evening here. Brian is a perfect host. Extensive wine list to suit all tastes/pockets. Starting with nibbles in the bar (freshly made by chef) then a choice of starters. We opted for scallops with coconut curry, ham... More

A warm welcome, cosy ambience, great attention to detail and food that never disappoints. Brian really does get it right! I've lost count of the number of times we have eaten at Barton Cross, and we've also stayed overnight when we don't wish to drive the few miles home. It's been our favourite venue for years.

We've been coming here for many years - we had our wedding reception here and come back for our anniversary meal every year.. We have never been disappointed with the ambience and the amazing food. In winter it is always so nice to walk into a cosy lounge area with a roaring fire. The welcome is warm and it is... More

Fab food and personal service. Evening dinner excellent (all 3 courses equally good, homemade bread), breakfast was one of the best full English's we have had for ages. Room comfy with good facilities, even welcomed our dog and gave us a room with French windows so we had easy access to outside. The décor maybe dated and quirky and not... More

Unfortunately we only stayed one night in this lovely hotel. Everything was very welcoming and the owner could not have been more helpful (organising early breakfast for us as it was my daughters graduation). The evening meal was a wonderful experience fabulous food and a great vegaterian menu as well. The family room we had (for 3 adults) was spacious... More

We stayed here September 2013 and had a fantastic time. The rooms do need a bit of cosmetic updating but they're quite retro and cosy feeling. The layout is brilliant for young families. My husband and I were able to enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant and our bedroom was in plain view and so close we kept popping... More
