On a rainy afternoon in August we needed a place to stay to break the journey. We found Barton Cross. It is a lovely quirky place. A thatched roof hotel set in a quiet area with many lanes and paths to follow. The staff are lovely and the place is clean and welcoming. The bar area is superb. More spirits... More

Set in the Devonshire countryside, this small hotel comprises two sixteenth century cob and thatched cottages which have been tastefully restored to retain all of their character together with a more recent extension which is in keeping with them. It is easily accessible situated in a lane about 1 mile from the Exeter to Tavistock road and there is an... More

Difficult not to like the place ........agree with most that the dining experience is very good with an extensive affordable wine list and affable atmosphere. Again with others I feel the bed and breakfast is overpriced.....the breakfast is very good but the rooms are crying out for introduction facility wise into the present day .Overall at these prices I would... This is a fantastic find! When asked for the vegetarian option - we didn't get the usual humdrum risotto - but were amazed by the inventive selection! We initially booked as they accommodate dogs and it isn't very far from Exeter. Will definitely be visiting again.

Off the beaten track, but well worth setting the sat nav for your visit. This quaint thatched hotel provided great food in attractive surroundings. Our room was large and well equipped, and had its own patio.

After years of eating at Barton Cross we had another birthday celebration here last night. The chef is wonderfully imaginative - the food is always superb. Add to this a lovely ambience and an always-friendly welcome - and you just can't go wrong. We have eaten in many restaurants in the region, nationally and abroad and the Barton Cross experience... We chose this place because on our trip to England we had London scheduled as our first stop before travelling on to Devon, and we thought it might be a good idea to have a peaceful place after the bustling capital. We were certainly not disappointed. I can't decide what I liked most about the place - the warm welcome,... More

We had our wedding reception here and come back every year for our anniversary. The Barton Cross is a real gem tucked away in the countryside. If you want a white & bright modern establishment where you're in and out within an hour or two this ISN'T the place for you....if you want a warm cosy atmosphere where you can... More

My wife, her sister, and I spent three nights at the Barton Cross in late August 2014. We found it utterly charming, comfortable, clean, and quiet. Our host, Brian, was most helpful in explaining how to get from the hotel's rather remote location to several places we wanted to go without going through the heart of Exeter. The dinners were... Stayed here while working in the area - turning off the M5 at Cullompton you seem to travel down miles of narrow lanes then eventually find the middle of nowhere - where this old thatched hotel nestles ! Yes the decor is dated but it's full of old English charm - and you get a friendly welcome from the owner.... More
