I stayed at The Papaya Playa Project mid-February 2014 for a week on my own (friends were staying down the beach at Amansala). Here’s the short of my review (read full review for details): 1. Room types, quality, amenities are vast and varied so make sure you know EXACTLY what you’re booking and what that means. This review is for... More

We didn't stay here, but came to spend the day in Tulum. Nice beach beds with shade, but lots of people pulled them out from the canopy to get sun (we had 2 babies - 12 & 14 months so stayed under canopy). The beach is incredible!! We ordered breakfast - chiliquiles for us and pancakes for the kids. So... More

We stayed here at the start of Feb 2014, and were highly disappointed. We arrived at night and were put into a Garden Cabana w A/C (which we booked for $200 per night). The room was at least a 7 - 10 min walk from reception in the dark and the room itself was a tiny shack, with no electrical... More

Papaya Playa Project is indeed a work in progress, and one incorporating many of the huts that used to belong to Cabanas Copal. These huts are on a very lovely and mostly empty stretch of beach. Papaya Playa Project, now part of Design Hotels, has revamped the restaurant area to be chic and trendier, with a deejay booth and a... More

Teenage Son and daugher, wife and I had a terrific time at PPP. Definitely a different kind of resort, not the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons as far as room accommodations. More like rustic thatch huts practically on the beach. Waves crashing to put you to sleep. No amenities in the room other than water, soap and shampoo. A side... More

For a moment I thought I had died, as I was lying in my hammock in front of my jungle cabana right at the ocean front, when the moon was blinking at me through sunshade roof. Nothing to hear but the waves crashing. But paradise was here. For what you are getting papaya is very overpriced (like everything in Tulum... More

Stay here at your own risk, that is, manage your expectations of quality. Some wonderful highlights - but if you're expecting better than 3-star (of 5) at any of the cabanas other than those that cost $700/night, you're going to be disappointed somewhere along the way. The good. Papaya has a great beach, a fun rustic feel, a genuinely pleasant... More

I'll start with the positive points- We walked the length of the entire beach and Papaya Playa was by far the cleanest. All seaweed/ litter washed up by the sea was cleared away every morning which made a real difference. The hotel is one of the first on the stretch so feels very secluded and private. Buffet style breakfast (included... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA, A DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT hitting Tulum, Mexico from December 6, 2011 to late 2012. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with Emilio Heredia, owner of the existing Papaya Playa beach bungalow resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-five cabañas have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabañas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm. ... more   less
