Perfectly located. Proof that there is more to hotels in Mexico City than the well known chains. Bargain price, friendly staff and great views from the balconies. Evidence that travellers should stay away from average travel info such as the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. We stay there often and have always had great experiences with no complaints.

Stayed on the 4th floor, the sides of the bed were so worn that I felt like I was rolling out of bed all night, and I needed a chiropractor the next day to get my hips right from sleeping off balance all night. We booked two rooms, both smelled like old socks, this place is in need of major... More

We never got to stay here because the desk clerk, (a man) gave us erroneous information. We checked on a Wednesday for the following Friday. The clerk told us there were rooms. We asked to make a reservation and he told us they would not make a reservation, He told us just to come back on Friday and we would... More

This hotel is low priced and offers a quite comfortable stay. We looked at other hotels costing one third more and felt what we got at the Rioja was just as good as the higher priced hotels. We took a room on the top floor which meant that we had to walk on one flight of stairs. But it was... More

This Hotel is a real mexican style low-budget at is best. Located perfect i calle cinco de mayo and very close to the Zocalo and Plaza Alameda. Many good places to eat close the hotel - even a 24 hour dinner place opposite the hotel. The room is basic and simpel - but clean quiet and for the price of... More

I stayed at this hotel for a few days during Christmas week 2011. It was recommended by some friends who always stay there. You can't beat the price and the location. It's close to the zocalo, transportation, and many restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that our room didn't have a balcony or a... More

It is a great inexpensive Hotel! It is located just a block and a half from the Zocalo! The people are friendly and it is safe! I have been staying there every time I am in Mexico City for the past 20 years. Across the street is a Restaurant (Cafe Popular) that never closes.

If you travel in Mexico on a budget as I do, the Rioja, only a couple of blocks off the northwestern corner of the Zocalo on historic Cinco de Mayo, is a paradise. That's because, other than a relatively few stopover points at various places (one thinks, e.g. of the Hotel Del Parque in Matehuala), it is hard to find... More

My wife and I always stay in this little gem whenever we are in Mexico city. It is very central, clean, quiet, a great price and well run but be warned, you cannot book in advance. The only way to get in is to be there before 1300 as people are leaving - so far we have missed out only... More

I have stayed at the Rioja many times and have loved it. It is very close to the Zocalo, Garibaldi, the subway and it is safe and clean. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are very clean. The staff is very pleasant and go out of their way to help you once they get to know you they warm... More

Staying in Centro Historico

Neighborhood Profile
Centro Historico
The beating heart of the city lies within Centro Histórico, the vast expanse of historical buildings and monuments that are a must when exploring Mexico City. Places such as the Museo Biblioteca Palacio Postal, Casa de los Azulejos and Palacio de Bellas Artes are the perfect eye candy for anyone seeking to admire arts and architecture. Don't forget to visit the wide variety of markets and plazas where any vintage item, handicrafts and jewelry characteristic of each state in Mexico can be found on Sundays. Admire majestic views of the city from the Monumento a la Revolución and Torre Latinoamericana, and round out the experience with restaurants of all cuisines nearby.
