Were taken here whilst visiting family who live in Halkirk - it's in walking distance which helps when visiting for a drink! This hotel has a lovely lounge if you want to enjoy a quiet drink The Hotel is in the middle of the village - and reading other reviews here I wouldn't mind coming for a meal when we... More

We dropped in purely by chance for lunch and we weren't disappointed. The place looked uninteresting from the outside, but when you go in its completely different. The decor is very tasteful and the place has obviously had a lot of money thrown at it. The bar is very cosy and the menu is lovely. We had lunch and couldn't... More

Definitely one of my favourite hotels in the north of Scotland and worth a visit. The hotel is remote in Halkirk main street right next to the river. Hotel food is always excellent and bar food is great. Rooms have been refurbished to a high standard. Hotel is expensive since there is little competition locally. Local produce used for breakfast.... More

We stayed at the Ulbster Arms on our tour around Scotland. We had planned to visit John o Groats but struggled to find reasonable accommodation. The Ulbster was far better than expected being situated in a small town. Reception was friendly and helpful, the service from all the staff was good and efficient. Some money has been invested as our... More

Never having been this far north before, we were having a few days touring between sheep sales in Dingwall and Lairg, and came across this hotel on the tourist info sheet at Thurso as having good food, but certainly not disappointed by both the food and accommodation we were given. The hotel's furnishings were warm and cosy, bed very comfy... More

We didn't stay here but if we come back we will. We had our first meal of Fish and Chips here. The fish was huge and I could not eat it all. Lightly battered and fresh. I believe it was the best fish and chips we had in Scotland. The bar was a flurry of activity and the service was... More

Afternoon tea at the Ulbster Arms 28/9/14. Excellent food in the beautiful and tasteful surroundings of The Library. A super time with very special friends and the company of a wonderful and extremely interesting lady.

Friendly staff, comfortable rooms, good food and top fishing banter with the other guests make this one of the UK's great fishing hotels. The welcome could not be warmer and the whole experience - including wonderful fishing - was truly memotrable. Our group of 4 (including a novice) caught 16 salmon despite difficult conditions. We will be back!

It's not often you find a hidden gem in as far north as Caithness but at the ulbster arms hotel you'll find just that. From the exterior it looks like a typical traditional highland hotel - traditional it certainly is but it's anything but typical. A warm friendly welcome from local staff, surprising luxury in the library and public rooms... More
