The hotel sofitel has a nice french colonial look, but is way over rated. First off the rooms are small and expensive for being in a country that is barely even developing. I got a cheaper stay at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico than I did here and the hotel was ten times better. The maids didn't leave fresh... more
We ended a cruise in Santo Domingo & wanted to stay one night in the Colonial zone before heading north for some scuba diving. Let me say that I have stayed in Sofitels before & I have yet to be impressed ... in fact, after this stay, I now believe I am downright biased against them. They're all show &... more
I think I'd heard so much good about this place, I was disappointed when I actually stayed there. My room was large (2 double beds) but rather dark with wobbly furniture. The bathroom had inadequate toiletries - just ONE shampoo (no conditioner.) The bedding was pretty bad. Lumpy pillows, tired sheets and rips/holes in the blanket. There was WiFi (unsecured)... more
We love this hotel very much, the staff is always nice and guys that serve breakfast in the morning. The rooms are also large which we like much. The breakfast is also great and also included in the price when u book. It is a little expensive, so if u want to go the extra mile then u can go.... more
stayed here february 2007, for a birthday surprise.. first time in dominicain republic... the hotel was nice, and quaint.. breakfast was included.. the location was not safe.. you walk outside of the hotel , and it becomes a slum. they advise you not to go out at night, because the streets are dangerous. armed police are out on the streets... more
I was traveling to Santo Domingo alone for a weekend and chose this place beacause of its proximity to the Colonial Zone and the historic nature of the hotel itself. If you are into history this is the place to be (that was my main reason for choosing this one) If you are looking for the discos and bars you... more
This is a great example of a quality boutique hotel. The architecture is nice with a courtyard and modest sixed lobby-restaurant. Don't go in expecting a Hilton or Marriott type of entrance, but the rooms here were nicer than certain "5-Star" business hotels I've stayed at in the US. My room featured 14 foot ceilings and lots of space, AC,... more
The Hotel Frances is a small, old hacienda, located in the historic Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo. It is only a few blocks from the Alcazar de Colon, Calle Conde, etc. We spent a week there in June, with 2 adults and 3 children. The rooms were very comfortable, spacious, and well kept. Because the hotel is old, the rooms... more
My wife and I stayed at the Sofitel Frances in mid-June 2007 and had a fine stay. We loved the historical details and charming feel of the place. After the relative chaos of the surrounding Santo Domingo, walking into the Frances was a cool relief. It might sound sort of cheesy, but the hotel was an oasis in the heat,... more
