After visiting St Lucia we decided to fly to Dominica and to stay at Roots for 4 nights. Our start has been worse - heavy rain, a 4WD car, manufactured approx. 1850 (we changed it after one day), and last but not least a 3 km (15 - 20 minutes length) way on something called dirt track, which is not... This place is beautiful. We went for our honeymoon and had an absolutely amazing time. Ollie and Lorena, the two who manage the property, are accommodating, friendly, and really good cooks. We ate breakfast with them everyday, and dinner most nights. The few times we ventured out, we wished we could have been back at Roots with Ollie and Lorena's... More

What a perfect hideway within the forest of Waitukubuli. We enjoyed the peaceful and basic place. There is a very rustic 'road' leading through the bush - approx. 15 Min. drive (you need a 4-W-D) and you will reach Roots. No cars, no traffic, no electricity at night, no computers but nature pur! At night you can hear the concert... More

My family and I just came back from Roots Jungle Retreat. We had a blast! From hiking on the property trails to swimming in the natural river pool, it was all exhilarating. The managers, Olaf and Lorena, went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and at home. We can now say we have some friends in Dominica.... More

My husband and I spent 8 nights at this beautiful place and enjoyed every minute of it. Yes, the driving from the main road is a little bit too tough but I guess that's the price of being secluded in a forest which by the way you start admiring right from the beginning. This is not a place for everyone... More

Ok, so the drive in shakes your bones. The cabins don't have windows. Birds fly in and eat your food. The place is run off a car battery, and you your water comes out of the River behind the cabins. At night, the noise from the waterfall is only eclipsed by the noise from the animals, and if it rains,... More

Had a fabulous time staying at Roots. Drove all over island exploring sites and natural treasures like Sari Sari Falls and Scotts Head. Nico was always available with suggestions and details and how to get there. Food was delicious and plentiful. Room was very relaxing with hammock and beautiful view of jungle. Hint: Bring binoculars to try and see parrots.

Stayed here with my girlfriend and it was amazing. Truly off the grid and in the middle of the jungle. Good food and from the minute we arrived, after the crazy off-roading path, I never once thought about email or cell phone.Nico was a great host!

From the moment we arrived we knew it was going to be a great experience. The road was a bit bumpy, but I guess that’s what keeps this place so genuine. Nico was a great host, excellent cook, and very helpful with everything we needed. He knows the island and will give you tips to visit places that are not... More

The reviews of this place are honest. Be aware it changed owners May '13. It's a good setting with jungle sounds etc yet pretty free of bugs. Facilities like a good camper van perhaps. If you've not experienced any sort of jungle it could be amazing. If you want real jungle (and bugs of course) try an eco lodge in... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Leave your everyday-world behind and join us in the magical jungle of Dominica. An untouched paradise where the air is clean, the water is fresh and the rainforest bursting with life. Right in the middle of it all you will find Roots Jungle Retreat. The perfect getaway for a natural, fun holiday, voted # 1 on Trip Advisor for the past year. Switch off your blackberry and experience the jungle sounds, the parrots and the fireflies, the refreshing water of the Bamboo river, and the beautiful organic food from our own jungle garden. We are 100% off the grid and eco-friendly. You will sleep in huts built by local Kalinago-Indians, with very comfortable bedding, as you need your rest after a day of fun. There are a million things you can do, but the great thing about Roots is that it’s also perfect for doing nothing at all. We are located next to the gorgeous Bamboo river and have our own swimming hole and little waterfall. You could just spend the whole day on the sundeck by the river reading a book. And we even have our own jungle style spa. We have built an Indian sweat hut for a nice detoxing experience. First you heat up until you start to sweat heavily, than you simply cool off in the river. Great for blood circulation and the immune system. But even more important: a great way to revive. More active visitors love to hike up the river. Further up on the mountain there is a bigger waterfall that is not reachable by road. You’ll have this magnificent place all to yourself! ... more   less
