We booked Santa Clara Libre as it seemed to have a central location and it looked as there was not much choice in what was on offer in Santa Clara. We had low expectations of the hotel, after reading the reviews and some additional research, and even for the provincial Cuban town, this was too cheap, to deliver any level... More

I read all the reviews and finally decided to check in myself on a one day trip to the city. I was given room 414 (Fidel's room). I have to say that the room was in good condition. There was a separate living room with another full wash room. No problems encountered, there was plenty of hot water. The hotel... More

I have stayed here five times in the last two years and think maybe the criticisms of Hotel Santa Clara Libre may not be totally fair. Yes, the rooms and beds are very small with a tiny shower space. I had hot water when I was there.... most recently in November 2011. Remember the price is incredibly reasonable ($18-26 US/Canadian/CUC)... More

Well - it is Cuba! And you do get what you pay for I suppose. I don't want to diss it too much, but it was pretty terrible. We had to move room as it actually felt like we were in a disco - there is a disco on the roof and one in the basement - so you are... More

Apart from the Roof Top Bar...not worth it. Book three nights left after night one...the rooms where crazy small, there was no water pressure and no hot water. The smells from the alley and the noise was amazingly bad. Its a huge green building in the middle of town that should be avoided!

We stayed at this hotel in mid December for one night and would have stayed longer if our schedule would have permited. The hotel is fairly easy to get to as it can be seen from quite a distance. There is a restaurant on the 10th floor with a good menu and very reasonable prices and the food is very... More

It is true that you can not beat the Santa Clara Libre's location in Santa Clara. It is very close to all the tourist spots, main square, bars and nightlife. It also has a great view from the 11th floor. However, the rooms are ropey and pokey at best, and the air con so noisy it was impossible to use.... More

Anyone expecting the lap of luxury in smalltown Cuba is on the wrong holiday. We were impressed by the minty-green exterior complete with bulletholes from the decisive battle of the Cuban revolution, the great location on the main square (highly recommend the bar under the theatre), the friendly and helpful staff, the lift that you have to bang on the... I didn't choose to stay at this hotel - it was booked for me by a cubatur agent in Havana who are obliged to book the state owned hotel. It hasn't had any maintenance since the revolution and looks more like an eastern european student dormitory. Tiny bathrooms, intermittent water flow - there was NO water one morning - very... More
