Never, in all our extensive travels, have we ever met more disgusting, rude, lying thieves than when we met the owner and staff of this establishment. Arriving in Aruba, on December 31, our rental car took us, not to the quaint little chalet pictured, but a slummy, dirty, run-down property. As a woman who lived in Cairo for years, I am not off-put by poverty affected areas, but this made me very uncomfortable. There were very aggressive stray dogs roaming the streets, creepy men looming at me in our rental car, and a For Sale sign on the front of the property. We called the number for the establishment to make sure we were at the correct location. Promptly answered, a man informed us there were no rooms for the night. Bewildered, we were, literally, holding a confirmation notice paid in full for a 4 nights stay, we had since August, and the confirmation notice from the establishment, confirming our stay, via Expedia. We asked immediately for a manager; an extremely aggressive man spoke next and would not listen to my boyfriend who, again, paid for the room, in-full, months in advance. Shocked, I stepped out of our rental car, despite my mounting discomfort, and heard the owner's ( the same man lying to my boyfriend on the phone) aggressive voice from the entrance to the regrettable establishment, some forty yards away. I told my boyfriend, over the yelling on the phone, that we needed to speak with the manager, in person, to correct the misunderstanding and show him the reservation, of which the owner had already accepted payment. We said we would be inside to clear this up, only to be answered with, "No, no, no! You are not welcome here!" *disconnect* At this point, our anger was palpable. We marched inside and immediately asked for the owner. The cowardly man, who just hung up on us, walked out complaining about us, saw my 6'5" boyfriend and, visually shocked pulled a 180 degrees "good ol' boy" routine and asked him to sit down on the front patio; my boyfriend complied, wishing to clear up the matter. He proceeded to tell us, after refusing to look at our, in-hand reservation, it is the booking website's fault and he was booked, we should have called him from the airport, we didn't tell him we were in a rental car, lies, lies, lies. None of what he was blathering about was expected of us, and, again, as experienced travelers, we knew none of what he was saying made any sense. Over him lying to my boyfriend, and refusing to look at our paid reservation confirmation, I confronted him and stated our present reality: "we have no place to stay tonight!" A woman rightfully asserting herself, clearly, brought out his misogynistic side. He slammed his ledger book on the table in front of me, and barked, "I have rooms, but never for you, EVER!" Having encountered chauvinistic behavior like this in the Middle East, I kept my cool, and blatantly called him a thief for taking our money and not delivering our room. The owner then proceeded to yell multiple obscenities about me and my mother. My boyfriend and I had enough and, while exiting, stated we were calling the authorities. He chased after us saying we could not do that, of course, we did not listen to him and reported him to the police. So, it goes without saying, if you do not want any part of your Aruban experience to reflect the first few hours of ours, avoid Little David Guesthouse like the plague!…
