The Hill on the Wall is a great English Manor House that was built in the 1590's. Upon arriving we were greeted with Tea and Lemon Cake. What a great way to end a long day of Treking!! The walk into town for dinner was along the road with no berm or sidewalk, but there was little traffic. Very large... More

We had a lovely night's stay. Managed to arrive early (rather than late which is our norm) but were welcomed by Elaine with tea and a great coffee and walnut cake. The room was warm and very comfortable with a lovely view towards Hadrian's wall. Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast set us up well for the day.

We were one night here and everything was excellent. Elaine kindly ran us back down the hill for dinner (after booking for us) and offered to come collect us (but we deferred and walked back up). The room was lovely and the bathroom one of the largest and best stocked. We stayed in Flavian's folly on the ground floor (our... More

After a day walking along the Hadrian's Wall Path, the climb up the hill from Gilsland seemed a little daunting, but it was worth it. We were rewarded with a warm welcome and the most beautiful room with wonderful views in a house that exudes a sense of permanence and hospitality. Elaine is a wonderful hostess and her attention to... More

I wish we had stayed more than one night; the location was beautiful and the room was excellent. The ensuite bathroom for Caligula's Chamber appeared to be quite new. TV, radio, fast wireless internet and in room magazines, books, tea and coffee and a jar filled with cookies that I somehow managed not to empty. When we went for dinner,... More

We stayed here midway through our walk along Hadrian's Wall in September. It was definitely the extra walk up the hill. Everything was outstanding. Our host was very welcoming and had a wicked sense of humour. The room was so comfortable with a lot of extra luxurious touches. The bed was huge and sleep-enducing. The house is very interesting with... More

We recently had the pleasure of spending 2 nights at Hill on the Wall B&B whilst visiting Cumbria for a friend's wedding. We could not have been happier. The location is absolutely stunning, with gorgeous views from our bedroom, which was generously sized with proper bed linen and a very comfortable bed. It is completely peaceful and the ideal place... More

The Hill on the Wall Country House would have been an amazing accomodation at any time, but to have had the luxury of staying here mid way through the long walk along Hadrian's Wall, made it feel like a slice of heaven! Ian brought us tea and lovely lemon cake on the patio, which as others have described, has beautiful... More

We stayed at this wonderful B&B in mid July, have talked of it often since, and felt sorry we didn't write a review - so better late than never! We arrived late afternoon after walking another leg of Hadrian's Wall. We were met by Ian who seated us on the sun bathed terrace with views across the valley - unchanged... More
