If you read the word 'spa' I think of sauna, swimmingpool, massages and so on. But as far as I could tell the spa referred only to an onsite hairdresser. Yes....the evironment of the hotel is beautiful and an even better word would be peaceful and quiet. I got in an hour before regular check-in time, but after a quick... More

As a family we are frequent to the Gilsland Spa Hotel for food on a Sunday. It is a typical old school country grand hotel. The decor is beautifully dated & the surrounding of the old roman villages are stunning on a nice day or a (usually) rainy day. The staff & level of service is a solid 8/9 out... More

Most importantly the staff are very friendly and helpful. Any problems were swiftly dealt with. But this hotel is in serious need of a makeover. If you like the old fashioned key that doesn't quite fit the lock because the doors were adapted to fire doors rather than replacing them; if you like tired furnishings; if you don't mind intermittent... My and my girlfriend went for a local getaway and although we didn't know what to expect we had a nice time, the thing with this hotel is, it is a bit dated and not really for the younger generation, the staff were lovely as were the people we spoke to, the food was ok, my burger was nice but... We travelled to gilsland via the M40 and M6 and although we left plenty of time we realised we were going to get there late, we contacted the hotel and the helpful receptionist informed us last orders for food in the orchard bar were at 8:30pm so if we thought we wouldn't get there before, it would be better to... Our rambler group of 29 have super week in June exploring Hadrian's Wall. The hotel was an excellent base being well organised, very nice food and helpful staff. For walkers, the hotel was a great base with a number of walks available from the hotel and fantastic views from the hotel. With a variety of needs, the hotel was most... More

The hotel is old fashioned - you could call it dated - but taking into account the age and size of the building, I think it's in reasonable condition. The rooms we had were spacious and clean, with fantastic views. The meals were fantastic and the service very pleasant. We had 3 days' walking in lovely countryside, followed by an... More

This was our third visit to Gilsland Spa and while it was a good week overall we thought some standards have slipped. The newly decorated parts of the hotel were very nice, well done. The staff were friendly as usual, no problems there, but the rooms REALLY need updating. Ours was acceptable, but the cleaning was substandard, the bathroom floor... More

I have just returned from a very pleasant few days at The Gilsland Spa Hotel. As always, I researched the hotel and new it's approximate location but as we approached on the day it exceeded my expectations by far, situated on the outskirts of Gilsland itself, the hotel is accessible to The Keilder forest and lakes, Northumberland NationalPark, Hadrians Wall,... Stopped here 1 night whilst walking Hadrians Wall. Staff really friendly and helpful right from the moment we arrived. Had a meal in the bistro and this was excellent value and big portions. Hotel very busy with several coach parties present. The breakfast , an additional £8.50 each on top of the £68 we paid for the en-suite room ,... More
