This campground is very small, very clean and very off-the-beaten path. There are no amenities other than clean bathrooms and a dishwashing station. The campsites are best suited to tent camping as there are no pull-ins for RVs of any sort and no hookups. Most campers when we were there were in tents. The facility is very clean and very... More

We stayed for one summer night. It was perfectly quaint with easily assessable trails and overlooks to see the best views. Perfect weather during the say and slightly chilly at night. It was super quiet at night so we had to keep our music very low. Lots of rabbits hopping around too. Whatever you do DONT MISS THE SUNSET!

Everyone that goes here either loves it or dislikes it. You will love it if you want to be away from tourist traps and enjoy being in the woods. Wonderful views and lots of hiking. Overlook has best sunsets in the Smokies. Downside is small sites, no showers and 40 minutes to town. If you like tent camping and love... More

During the government shutdown of 2013 we went to Pisgah Campground and it was good but the weather had been really wet all year.In August 2014 we returned to Balsam to see 54 degrees during the days of August, what could be better. Never saw over 5 drops of rain. Ranger Jack has retired and the Ranger that was there... More

The area is just lush with greenery. The sites are small and no electric or water so it is rustic. We were only there one night as we were just passing through but we will return. Reservations are not accepted so it is first come, first serve.

We enjoyed our first visit to Balsam Mountain Campground since 2012. Was closed in 2013 due to the silly sequester. The campground was as beautiful as ever. We picked spot #18 on the one-way portion of the loop road. The campground did not seem to be as used as in the past, maybe because of sequester, maybe because of the... More

Balsam Mountain Campground is a nice campground for the following reasons: 1) At over 5000 elevation it is the highest campground in Smokey Mountain National Park which means that it stays nice and cool even in the summer time. 2) Because you can only get to the campground off of the Blue Ridge Parkway it's a bit out of the... Visited the area in late May to discover Balsam Mountain Campground is open for 2014. It was closed all of last year due to budget cuts but it is open this year so far. I have not stayed at this campground but I do love the area. Very scenic, always much cooler in the summer due to the mile high... More

We have been to this campground the last two years. I really like the fact that it never gets very hot. The altitude is over 5000'. It is a little small for as many campsites as they have packed in there. We have always enjoyed it though. Several nice short hiking trails within a few miles. I am sad that... More

"CLOSED FOR 2013 - The Balsam Mountain Campground and Picnic Area including the Heintooga Ridge and Balsam Mountain Roads will be CLOSED for 2013 due to Sequestration Budget Cuts at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park." This is really too bad as this is a nice, high elevation, scenic area. You can still walk up the road to the campground... More
