This is a beautifully restored old theater, situated in rural Yunnan in the middle of rice fields. It is a China that is rapidly disappearing in its rush to development. The rooms are small, but very functional. The staff very welcoming and accommodating. The breakfast of Yunnan noodles was delicious. What is most special about this hotel is the surroundings,... Life in a real rural village within the broad fertile valley with those hills as a backdrop. Red wine on the courtyard and the delicious meals prepared as you like. Nothing too much trouble. Warm hostesses and the tranquility we expected

The staff are amazing, the food is wonderful, the views serene. It's not the cheapest in the area at $80 a night, but you get what you pay for and after dinner, drinks and rental of mountain bikes (which are good quality) we paid $180 for a night for 3 people all sharing a room. I would highly recommend the... More

When you arrive at this place amid the rice fields and walk up the steps to the entrance, you know this is going to be an amazing stay - and it was. Lovely courtyard with a temple on top. The rooms are small but functional and tidy. We engaged a local Bai minority guide Apple and she was simply wonderful.... More

I enjoyed the Old Theater Inn,and would stay there again, but there were a few minor downsides. However, within it's category-it's not a deluxe or luxury property-I think it is very nice, thus the 4 star. It is a historical, charming and comfortable country inn which has been nicely and faithfully restored. (They were limited in what they could do, given it's... More

Dear Sir, We're so happy to know you enjoyed your stay with us and we want to let you know about some improvements we're making, as we really listen to guests' suggestions. We have added outdoor seating in the courtyard for five more people, bringing our outdoor seating capacity to 25 spaces, plus four places on the restaurant balcony. We... More

We've enjoyed a super nice trip in Shaxi! The old theatre inn is the very best choice for staying in this small town. We stayed for four nights and almost the only guest there. We really enjoyed the quite old town life style there and had males in the yard! Nice to be back to the old times. We would... More

This is a fabulous place to stay. The rooms are really well maintained and the team working at the Inn are all incredibly lovely and helpful. Sam and Tina were exceptional – they were lovely, helpful, and assisted us with our bikes and many questions regarding the area and things we could do. We were lucky enough to spend some... More

If you are interested in traveling to Dali or Lijiang, I would recommend a side trip for 2-3 days to the Old Theatre Inn, just outside the town of Shaxi. At the Inn you can enjoy the countryside of China that most of us don't get to see on a regular basis. The Inn is off the beaten path, which... More

The property is nicely renovated and affords good views of the countryside. The rooms are smallish and the walls are paper-thin – something that one would not expect in a recently remodeled high quality Inn. Instead of installing sound proofing the owners decided to post signs asking the guests to whisper and I guess to avoid any other noises that... More

Dear Madam, We're so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us more. The rooms are in an original wooden building, the walls of which we have thoroughly soundproofed last year, though there is no way to completely block out all noise in such traditional wooden buildings. As some guests are unused to staying in rustic temple buildings, we have... More

My wife and I stayed at the OTI for our wedding anniversary, which is November 28. This is off season for the area, so there was only one other guest in the hotel. The staff was super. On arrival, Sammy came out to the street to greet us and welcome us in. The whole staff (of 3 or 4) was... More
