This very luxurious and well laid out lodge is in fact in the wilderness. It is situated on the side of Lake Maoreki with rain forest all around it. Some guided walks and kayaking are included in the price and some other walks at an additional charge. The whole area is stunning. The lodge and rooms are very comfortable, the... More

Like its sibling at Arthur's Pass, the Lodge combines genuine creature comforts and intimacy with nature. Offering a postcard view on the river that empties Lake Moeraki into the Tasman Sea, the Lodge has a comfortable lounge and a restaurant with first-class food. There are well laid out walks through the temperate rain forest, including one to Monro Beach. Better... More

Our two night stay at Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. To start with, the setting is simply spectacular along the shore of the fast-moving Moeraki River. The lodge itself is beautiful and very comfortable, as was our room with its nice river view. We also enjoyed the meals and the... More

- beautiful view of the river from rooms and restaurant - good bar & very good restaurant with excellent food and decent variety - excellent rooms with screens, big glass windows & an overhead fan With he above, the reader may wonder how I could rate this average. The reason is that I found the owner/proprietor clearly does not want... More

Finally catching up on outstanding reviews from our trip to New Zealand Gerry and Anne run a terrific operation. The lodge is about an hour from the closest tiny town and is a mix of nature and luxurious touches. We splurged on the river view room, (over $1000 for 2/night), which was fantastic. Very spacious, full wall of windows, walkout... More

Gerry McSweeney, a ph.d biologist, and his fantastic wife Anne, established the Wilderness Lodge years ago and walk the talk. They raised their children here and the remarkable setting is unbelievable. Gerry knows every plant, tree, star and animal. They both have delightfully wicked senses of humor which is a godsend when you're traveling. You can't help but feel like... More

This wonderful hotel is indeed in a wilderness - no mobile phone coverage possible here! There is wifi if you're really desperate but this truly is a great location away from the stresses of modern life. Set in its own grounds and surrounded by native forest and a river, it is such a peaceful place to be. Very comfortable room... More

We were so delighted with our two-night stay here. We were traveling with a Backroads bike tour and didn't select the Lodge ourselves, and the love for this place was unanimous among our group. We only spent a short time at Wilderness Lodge which we thought was a lovely place and not as difficult to reach as we had imagined.
