We had a 3 night stay in the ground floor garden room at the bottom of the drive, we were greeted by Phil and Wathsala, Phil really went out of his way to be helpful and make us feel at home. Our room was very spacious with lovely big bed, it had a ceiling fan which was a life saver... More

We stayed at the Spice House for two nights in January 2014- we would have liked to stay longer. The house itself is beautiful- set back from the Galle Road (which IS vey busy)- we actually stayed in one of the rooms in the building at the bottom of the garden. It was wonderful: very secluded with a lovely comfortable... More

We stayed 5 nights at Spice House (in the main house) with our 2 children. The hosts Phil and Watsala are so friendly and made our stay perfect. They have a beautiful house with the jungle as their backyard. We saw purple faced leaf monkeys, fireflies, chipmunks, big parrots and they have a tortoise walking around the garden. The food... I stayed for 2 nights at the Spice House and was not disappointed. I stayed in the cinnamon room at the front of the house and even though Galle road made it slightly noisy, the room was large, clean and had everything in that I needed. The owners Phil and Wathsala are lovely people, helping to book tours and just... More

We stayed for 2 nights in the mud house which is set down the bottom of the garden. A little bit more lighting on the path down the garden would be useful. Pleasant for dinner (we ate both nights), all the guests who want dinner eat at the same table which adds to the interest. The food was very good... More

We stayed at The Spice House for 3 nights and like staying in small places that feel like home. The Spice House was small and cosey with a friendly atmosphere. We ate in and the food was really delicious and good value - the pineapple curry was particulary good. Drinks were also cheaper than anywhere else we stayed in Sri... More

The Spice House is a lovely guesthouse in Mirissa. The highlight of this place has to be the fantastic landscaped gardens (we spent hours watching amazing birdlife playing in the trees in the afternoon) and the two owners. Phil and Wathsala are fantastic hosts and will go out of their way to be helpful and make you feel at home.... More

We spent 6 nights at the spice house, staying in the mud house. We were worried before we arrived that we would be the oldest people ( in our 50's), but that wasn't the case at all. There is a very varied mix of guests that stay here, which adds even more to its charm. We particularly loved the communal... More

This place is perfect. Set back from the road in the jungle with monkeys, chipmunks and beautiful grounds. We were lucky in stay in one of the nicest rooms 'the garden room' with our own veranda looking over the green and colourful jungle/garden. Great hosts who are so helpful. We did a cookery course which was brilliant and the chef... More

We stayed with Phil and Wathsala a couple of weeks ago for 5 days and we are so pleased we chose to stay at the Spice house. The facilities particularly the beautiful infinity pool and delicious chef cooked breakfast for this price bracket are excellent and the attention to detail particularly on furnishings and decor are exceptional. Overall the standard... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Spice House, Mirissa is a beautiful Colonial style guesthouse with its own private swimming pool set in a peaceful, landscaped garden full of tropical flowers, fruits, spices, ponds & hammocks. It is ideally situated only one minute from a beautiful, reef protected bay & 1km from the main bustle of Mirissa beach. The guesthouse is English owned by an experienced traveller and his Sri Lankan Wife which allows us to offer our guests the perfect mix of Western comfort & luxury alongside Sri Lankan charm & service - we like our guests to feel like part of the family. The house is shaded by coconut palms & cinnamon trees to the front while the back is terraced which allows wonderful views over the surrounding jungle. Local wildlife is often seen in our garden with daily visits from monkeys, kingfishers, peacocks, woodpeckers & squirrels.
