I loved this spot on the Pacific coast, just a couple hours from Leon via local buses. It's low-key, offers both dorm beds or private cabanas, and you can buy basic but tasty breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Do try the red snapper (fresh!) if it's available. There's no "bar" here (go up the road for that) but there's plenty of... More

One of the best locations I've been to during my 6 weeks traveling through Nicaragua. The rancho is pretty basic but that's part of what makes it so nice and there's all you need. The food is delicious and healthy and prepared with love. The staff is really friendly and helpful and they seem to be really happy to work... More

too many regulations. too uncool host. too far away from the beach. too bright security lights at night. too pretentious when it comes to engagement. too much like a business. too conservative. i did not like it all. i strongly advise all the more special people to go to the other place on that beach. I wish I'd known about this place before I began traveling to Nicaragua - it was by far the best place I visited. First about the location: I was hoping to find an uncrowded beach with good surfing to stay for a few weeks and this was definititly the place. I went to Playa Madras and it was great but... More

On a month-long solo trip in Nicaragua, I stayed at Rancho Esperanza for my final week. I had plans to make my way up there sooner, but the beauty of Nicaragua kept me in other places longer than anticipated. When I arrived in Jiquilillo, I instantly regretted that I took so long to make my way there. Rancho Esperanza is... More

So many beachfront tourist spots are built on the backs of the local people and the local ecosystem and you can feel it's an intrusion that's tolerated for the money. Rancho Esperanza is the total opposite because Nathan has built it with the trust and support of the community. Nate's place exists because he wanted to help Jiquillio and it... More

Staying at Rancho Esperanza was definitely one of the best parts of our 4 month-round the world trip. We stayed with Nate and his crew for two weeks as volunteers and loved it. Nate and his staff were so helpful, fun and dedicated not too mention the setting and location of Rancho Esperanza is incredible! there is so much to... More

I am baffled by the review calling Rancho Esperanza and its owner Nate hypocritcal. I am pretty cynical about claims of responsible tourism but this is the real deal. The staff I spoke with are very happy with their jobs and feel they are treated very fairly. The education program that is run on the property is outstanding from my... More

not only is jiquilillo beyond beautiful but rancho esperanza is the best possible place to stay. the library of books there is like a breath of fresh air as far as hostels go and the vibe is friendly and laid-back. all of the staff there are happy and it shows. the owner goes out of his way to be friendly... The accomodating staff at Nate's will ensure that you enjoy your time when in Jiquilillo. The beach is right there and there are nice little waves to surf. The place is very authentic, with thatched huts and the big rancho. The place had a very nice feel to it. Friendly staff and other travellers made for interesting conversation and the... More
