Karon is a much nicer place to stay than Patong. Cleaner, quieter, nicer beach, good shopping. Nightlife in the main street is great. Cannot remember name of pubs but one on the right heading towards Patong has a great live band, lots of ladies outside saying "welcoming, welcoming" Just be aware a lot of peddelars come in off the street... We stayed in a Pool View Room which was very good. The chairs on the balcony are not comfortable and people should be asked not to drag them around in the early morning.
