As a family of five needing two rooms, Vanessa couldn't have been more helpful in accomodating us all (including a 12 and 9 year old) in comfort. One of the rooms we took felt like a whole wing of the house: 14ft-high ceilings and acres of space, yet still warm and friendly. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms smart. Breakfasts were... More

A wonderful country house in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity in a magnificent rural setting look no further. From beginning to the end of our stay we could have not been made more welcome. We had our evening meals at the George and Dragon, some 4 miles away, in Asgarth and... More

We were looking to explore the Yorkshire Dales and despite a late booking Vanessa was able to accomodate us - and in a stunning four poster bedded room. The room was huge with furnishings that were above the usual standard. A great touch was a proper fridge with real (not UHT!) milk and space for your own wine (or cheese... More

Here for a birthday week-end. Vanessa seems to run the whole show on her own - which is pretty amazing considering the size of the place & the standard she sets! Really great in every department. The room was huge, clean, airy & with a super view. The breakfast large, well presented & cooked. Great for young couples, retired couples,... More

On a back road in the Dales this is an excellent getaway location. The room we had overlooked the lawn and was warm and comfortable. The owner was helpful, if a little too interested in our personal affairs, and breakfasts were served promptly and were well prepared. We did not have a dinner at the house as we preferred to... Hello Aubrey, thank you so much for your kind words, although it did make me chuckle that you thought my inquisitiveness about an Australian owning a British registered vehicle whose wife was going onto South Africa to visit her father, was overly nosey. I guess there is a balance between taking a passing interest and appearing overly interested. I am... More

On arrival at Thornton Lodge we were welcomed like long lost friends, Vanessa is a very special lady and her love of this house shines through. We have stayed in many hotels over the years but we can honestly say we have never had a nicer room. It was huge, beautiful, and had everything you could wish for and looked... More

Another relaxing break at Thornton Lodge. From the moment you arrive Vanessa cannot do enough for you from taking photo's of my special surprise, to booking our evening meal at a locally recommended hostelry. The room was dual aspect giving wonderful views of the Dales whilst laying in the antique four poster bed, a real treat. Thank you again Vanessa... More

Hubbie and I stayed at Thornton Lodge for one night and we really enjoyed our stay. It's very rural and surrounded by stunning countryside, more remote than we usually go for, but really loved it...it's not often we stay somewhere that has a peacock wandering the grounds. Our room was lovely, the bed was so comfortable I could have stayed... More

5 cyclists and one back up driver arrive soaking wet after completing half of the Yorkshire leg of the Tour de France - Vanessa is there - tea and biscuits and tumble dryer at hand. LOVELY place to stay - very comfortable, clean, friendly and welcoming. Vanessa recommended the George and Dragon in Aysgarth to eat which was equally excellent... More

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in - wonderful, huge rooms furnished with gorgeous antique furniture, even had peacocks roaming the grounds. Lovely breakfasts and a good, plentiful banquet in the evening. Very accommodating host who did everything possible to make our party weekend one to remember. An excellent property in a lovely location. Highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Thornton Lodge is a 5 star gold award, luxury country house offering b&b with dinner sometimes available by arrangement, in Wensleydale. Located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and lovely views. An ideal base for walking or touring the Dales the house is particularly enjoyed by those seeking peace and tranquillity. Serving local food wherever possible, breakfasts are wonderful and my simple home cooked dinners for guests unable to journey out for dinner are very popular, served in a beautiful oak panelled dining room. Dinner is only available by prior arrangement and takes the form of a set meal - it is not available on Sundays, Wednesdays or certain 'family' days. Rooms are large, airy and very comfortable with lovely views. Whilst we are not licensed we welcome guests to bring their own drinks and have fridges or wine coolers in all bedrooms. Although we have 9 rooms we usually have 4-6 rooms of people staying which makes for a lovely atmosphere in the house and allows me to do so much myself. please see the summary from our visit england tourism inspection of 15/8/2013 "Thornton Lodge is a well presented property that continues to generally offer a very high standard of excellent overall accommodation maintained to a very high standard for which the Proprietors are to be congratulated. Continued investment helps ensure that these standards are maintained and help ensure that the property sits comfortably at the upper end of the Five Star Guest Accommodation rating band".also, "Cleanliness/HousekeepingExemplary levels of cleanliness on this visit with obvious attention to major surfaces and carpets well vacuumed to corners and edges, for which the Proprietors and team are to be congratulated. Sparkling chrome and glass in the bathrooms a particular feature." ... more   less
