I was also fortunate to be part of a Julian Merrow-Smith painting workshop that stayed there this past summer and I agree with everything that's been said. The hospitality of Jude and Phillip is second to none. They worked tirelessly to make us feel at home. La Madelene is in a beautiful area surrounded by orchards and wineries. My room... More

My husband and I spent a week at La Madelene. We went as part of a painting workshop with Julian Merrow-Smith. Now we would return to La Madelene for any reason we could find! We had no advance idea how fortunate we would be that the workshop participants housed, wined and dined at La Madelene. The innkeepers, Phillip and Jude,... More

A Week in Paradise I stayed at la Madeliene with a group of about a dozen. Each room in this former 12th century priory had it’s own charm and history. Looking out of our window (through the yard-thick stone walls) at the valleys and mountains of Provence was nothing short of spectacular. The setting allowed us all to come together... More

Being part of a group of painters on a painting holiday run by Julian Merrow-Smith in mid-July, we had the pleasure of staying at La Madelene for a week. The setting is magical (a car would be a recommendation as it is a beautiful area to be explored...gorgeous little villages/towns not far away), the accomodation luxuriously elegant (fine percale linen,... I was lucky enough to stay at la Madelene for a week this past summer, and it was perfection! Jude and Philip wined and dined us, even accomodating my gluten-free diet at every meal! As my group painted the landscapes surrounding the beautiful old priory, Jude worked her magic in the kitchen, creating deliciously fresh, locally sourced gourmet lunches and... More

From the short trip from Avignon, through the vividly coloured landscape of Provence to the crunching pebbles of the driveway of La Madelene under our wheels. It was a wonderful arrival for this excited albeit weary traveller. Stepping inside this 13th Century priory exceeded any preconceived ideas I had of La Madelene, finding a boutique interior, magnificent room with pristine... More

I spent a week at la Madelene in May, 2014 for a painting workshop. The scenery was wonderful right outside the door. My room was very quiet and comfortable. Philip and Jude were the best hosts anyone could want. Food and wine was amazing. I loved the swimming pool, too! I wouldn't change a thing and hope to return someday.

The marriage of La Madelene and hosts Philip and Jude with the very first Julian Merrow-Smith Painting workshops is a recipe for the ultimate experience on all levels. The ambience of the beautifully restored and comfortable old Priory in a such a lovely setting, is to begin with, an artists dream! Philip and Jude are the most friendly, welcoming and... More

A group of us had the great fortune to stay at La Madelene for a painting workshop. The hospitality and meals provided by Phillip and Jude far exceeded our expectations, each meal was an incredible experience. The building was beautifully preserved and tastefully updated so that we were completely comfortable. The countryside surrounding the grounds was really lovely. Phillip and... More

What a jewel. A place so special you want to keep it to yourself and not share... but I must!!! My stay at La Madelene was wonderful! The hosts Philip and Jude made my stay magical. They were not only friendly and caring, but, also, gave exceptional attention to detail. La Madelene offers fabulous gourmet meals and wine (as well... More
