Lovely family house with 6 bedrooms let out as quality hotel. Run by charming and helpful manageress. All guests eat together at one dining table. Casal de Loivos is a small village up in the hills and vineyards above The Douro River. Those looking for entertainment on the spot will be disappointed, but those who enjoy a quiet rural base... A friend and I stayed in this small hotel, sitting on top of a mountain overlooking the Douro valley. The house is a family home rebuilt after wardamages in the original style and fitted with authentic antiques, paintings and crockery. Very homely too. Staff kind, professional and eager to please. Rooms small but comfortable and situated in a way that... More

We climbed the twisting 7km road up to Casal de Loivas and this very special small hotel over-looking Pinhao and the Duoro valley. What magnificence sitting on the terrace after being welcomed so kindly and warmly by Sandra and her staff; she could not have been more attentive. Casa de Casal de Levois is a ‘retreat extraordinaire’. So much so,... More

The hotel and staff are fabulous. The location and views are stunning. The rooms are small but clean and the bathrooms were good. I would highly recommend this as a destination. However I would also highly recommend not to chose to have dinner at the house. It was a very simple dinner and completely overpriced. This was by far the... More

This house was built in 1658 by the Sampaio family and has spectacular views of the mountains and vine yards terraced below, from the terraces and swimming pool over the river. We were met by the manager and a maid, and when settled in our lovely room, which opened on to the terrace, were offered a glass of white port... More

My husband and I returned to this Casa for the third time in 10 years. What you experience is Portuguese culture at it's best. If one is looking for a modern hotel with large rooms and en suites then this is not the place for you. The views are spectacular. About 12 people can be accommodated and we share a... More

We were planning to stay a few nights at Casal de Loivos but left after the first. Although the views are indeed stunning and the personnel are friendly the place is hugely over-priced: 110 euros for a tiny double room without airconditioning; 27 euros for a very simple dinner (without the wine included!) - one can eat far better and... It's true that this hotel has one of the most gorgeous views in Portugal, high up on a hill overlooking the Douro river valley. But that's about it. The room was small, with no amenities-- bring your own shampoo. Service minimal. Breakfast is toast and coffee -- you have to pay extra for eggs, etc. Not a terrible place, but... More

If you want absolute silence, peace and quiet with a stunning Douro view, thats the place for you. But know that getting to Casa de Casal de Loivos is not easy: from Pinhão, you take a winding road up to get there, and dont dare doing it at night because it could be dangerous. The hotel is actually an old... More

We stayed 3 nights in early June, weather unseasonably cool. Easy to find & the position & views are exceptional, awesome. And I still swam twice. The service is very good but very old fashioned. Manuel the elderly proprietor is delightful, & his suggestions of wine tasting with the fabulous ( & unique to me) audio commentary at Quinta da... More
