Although there was maybe only one other couple staying in the hotel,we were put in a room on the top floor and the lift wasn't working. There was NO offer of a room on the lower floor until late in the evening when we were already settled into the upper floor room. We had asked for a room with a... More

We visited for ten days in October 2013. It is a very friendly, well appointed hotel in a beautiful, historic house. The restaurant offers a good selection of local dishes and there are several other restaurants within walking distance. We loved the O Chafariz cafe. Fight your way through the bar packed with locals to a simple dining room where... More

We came in off-off season (4 January) so the restaurant was closed and the town was very quiet. The room was a good size and well presented with a view of the castle. The building itself was beautiful, with a large snooker room and beautifully decorated lounge with fireplace. A huge breakfast (included) was delivered to our room in the... More

This is a good hotel for the rural category. Rooms have a good size, comfortable but towels were not 100% clean. This was promptly solve by the staff. Cleanliness of the hotel could be better in same parts of the room and in the areas around the swimming pool. Breakfast is poor: it is ok to have little diversity but... More

The staff, cooking school, hotel, guided tours, food, countryside - all were fabulous. We attended the week-long cooking school at Refugio da Vila and had a wonderful experience. The accommodations and food were excellent, however, the friendly staff and locals made our stay exceptional. Sofia, the hostess and owner, Chef Pedro, Duarte, Sara, and Andrea were the best at making... More

This was a very special hotel with excellent food. All four of us just loved it. And this part of the Alentejo region is just beatiful to tour around with so much close at hand. The staff were excellent and the locals very friendly, plus they made our dog welcome too - what more could we ask for.

I stayed at the Refugio da Vila for six nights for a cooking school vacation run by the hotel. This is a beautiful place, in a beautiful area of Portugal, with fantastic personnel, and, Sofia, the lovely hostess and owner. The restaurant's charming chef teaches Portuguese cooking in a special kitchen off the courtyard. The classes and excursions were well-planned... More

If it is peace and tranquility that you are seeking then this area of the Alentejo is for you. Refugio is an old old building restored to its former glory with fabulous ceilings and a great feeling of opulence from bygone days. The staff are warm and friendly, good English spoken if you need it, and very helpful. The restuarant... More
