We felt as though we were having a total Imladris experience here. There is something very special about this place. It is a place of deep restful tranquillity and timelessness. A place where one can very easily stay for a long time. The ambience was so peaceful and meditative, that we just wanted to stay for days. Villa Modarawattha makes... More

Stayed in family group renting four rooms and had villa much to ourselves. Manager Prasanna and all his staff were excellent. Lovely grounds on lake's edge and well kept, with a small pool. Food was very good and sensibly priced. Very helpful for all extra requests we made eg with organising a two day trip into highlands

We booked 2 superior rooms at this villa through Agoda – when we arrived after a 9 hour drive we were told by the manager Prasanna that he hadn’t received any confirmation of our booking from Agoda and that they were fully booked – then miraculously after 15 minutes and a phone call he said there had been a cancellation... What a place! Its situation is idyllic at the end of a dirt track next to a beautiful lagoon with rabbits in the garden. We stayed 2 nights here and found this villa a wonderful place to relax. It's very small with only 5 rooms so if you're after total peace and tranquility then this is for you. We didn't... More

It's a perfect place for individuals away from crowded hotels and beaches. The Villa is wonderful, has a real charm but fortunately only 5 rooms. The staff is extreme helpful and kind, they served us with a lots of love and attention. The nearest beach (South Beach) is about 400 m and there were usually nobody just us. You can't... More

The villa offered us a sublime base to visit Galle and the surrounding area, we were lucky to have the house to ourselves and enjoy it fully.Villa Modarawattha is a grand old dame that needs lots of love and care, the wild life is charming particularly the rabbits. The Sri Lankan meal prepared for one dinner was truly memorable, the gracious... More

The hotel was simply amazing. This is not like the Fortress where it is top of the line mod cons, but it has a wonderful rustic charm and feel. Being able to maintain the fine balance between rustic with all the modern amenities you expect from a boutique hotel was spot on. The staff were attentive and the ambiance of... More

I booked 3 nights in this beautiful old dutch villa in july 2013 for my family (5 people including 3 children) and really enjoyed my stay. The rooms are beautiful and very tidy. There is a nice garden with small rabbits running everywhere. The swimming pool is small but so pleasant just in front of the Koggala lagoon. It is... More

Stayed here in March 2012 with friends as we were over for the Sri Lanka v England Cricket tour, and we had more or less every room on site (5 rooms in total I think). Although the villa is a short drive from Galle (approx 20-ish mins on a Tuk-Tuk) at the end of a private dirt road, it's one... More

Welcome with a welcome drink, yes we had that before. But welcome also with a cool welcome towel on midday to rub of the dust / heat of the trip was a really nice little touch. This place has a lot of charm: - Only 4 rooms make the villa very private. - Large grounds filled with coconut and frangipani... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We take pride in introducing Villa Modarawattha as a Villa of absolute serenity and tranquility. Ideally situated on the banks of the famous Koggala Lake which is home to the historical Madolduwa Island and many other smaller islands such as Cinnamon Island etc; Great writers of the likes of Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe & Sir Leonard Wolfe, onetime Government Agent of Hambantota, would have had more than one reason for writing many stories based on these historical Islands. The Villa itself is a typical Dutch House which is over 150 years old. It has been completely refurnished to retain its original splendour and glamour to blend with the modern times. Consisting of four luxurious bed rooms with en-suite bath & toilet complete with hot & cold running water, four poster beds inclusive of all amenities, adequate fresh air with a very soothing and simple design to create the right atmosphere for a retreat. The guests are pampered by our well trained butlers and are free to relax on the verandas over looking the waters of the Koggala Lake while watching the local fishermen cast their nets and the boats carrying holiday makers to and from the Islands. Dooland de Silva, the once head gardener of the famous Bevis Bawa and now the proud owner of ‘The Breef’ has transformed a scrub jungle into an Eldorado. The lush lawns, the pergolas, the ponds that attract many a species of bird life, paths, and shady corners, all designed to give the Villa a true sense of harmony which makes your stay here very close to nature. Seated watching the sun go down, the birds flutter in the water, sipping a freshly brewed cup of tea or a mock tail would definitely stir your senses. As we take great pride in the Villa, we take even greater pride in our garden, which is the ultimate.Dining at the Villa is an experience. Exotic! A gourmet journey that would leave you mesmerized. Be it a candle lit dinner by the lake or on the veranda, our selection of wines & spirit will complement your food. We have thought of everything, left no stone unturned to create the right ambiance, just for you ... more   less
