Really good weekend deal. Food was above average and nice afternoon tea, nothing to complain about. The surroundings are really beautiful too, be aware thought that the nearby castle is not open in winters (at least it wasn't now).

Very nice 15th century traditional Swedish wood building centrally located in the pictoresque town of Mariefred. We found a table in the bar. Quite nicely decorated with a degree of simplicity - cozy. I ordered cod (Skrei). Service OK, but the cod took too long time. Served in a soupbowl did make it a bit challenging to eat. The fish... What fine property. The rooms, though a bit small, are expertly made with faux painted wall and parqued wooden floors. The beds are soft and our bathroom was tiled. It is the oldest inn in Sweden, with parts of it's log ceiling taken from a dismantled monistary. It is located across from and with a fine view of Gripholm Castle.... More

We've stayed at Gripsholms Vardshus and Hotel several times, and it always charms us. The rooms are bright, and the slightly elevated old beds make it feel like grandma's house...except her beds weren't that comfortable. There are plenty of alcoves in the common areas to read a book or gather with friends. Breakfast is ample and varied, although it does... More

I ate here during a day trip to Mariefred last August. Food is served in two areas, the bar serves a cheaper menu, mainly daily specials, and the restaurant has the full a la carte menu. The bar is located at the back of the hotel. Although beautifully decoarated it is quite dark. The food was delicious and reasonably priced.... More

Utterly charming in a 17th century building. The rooms are in a genuine old fashioned Swedish country style but very comfortable and immaculately clean. The hotel is at the lake’s edge in the ridiculously pretty village of Mariefred and looks across the water to the fabulous gloomy towers of Gripsholm Castle, which is also the Swedish National Portrait Gallery. I... More

We spent a week-end here and really enjoyed the stay. We had a welcome drink, dinner and breakfast included to a price that was not cheap but neither expensive by Swedish standards. The staff was really nice and helpful, the hotel is in a nice old building but the rooms are really old as well. It see s that they... More

Right beside the lake and looking at the Slott. Boats around and charming gatans with the kyrk out the back. Lovely relaxed feel about this 400 year old inn (with modern extensions, of course!). Lunch in the 'pub' was very good and reasonable value. Great garden to relax in and view the castle and the lake. Buffet breakfast was in... More

Our stay at Gripsholms Vardshus was a change in our original itinerary. Having researched the place we were originally going to stay, we were somewhat reluctant to agree to the change, but we did. We were not disappointed. We had a very nice suite with a beautiful view across the water to the Gripsholms Castle. The hotel was in easy... More

Most people go to Mariefred to see Gripsholms Castle. This quaint little town is about forty-five minutes drive west of Stockholm. The little wooden houses look as if they have been around for almost as long as the castle which was started in the 14th century and completed in the 16th. The Gripsholms Vardhus proudly displays the date 1609 above... More
