The pousada is a old monastery and because of this has lots of charm. We stayed in the new wing and the room was big with view to the countryside. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choices and local products. Unfortunately the pool was closed in April, inspite the fact that it was very warm.

Stayed in suite 601 on the top floor of the tower which comes with 2 generous roof terraces and a breathtaking view. A bit to walk from the car park for getting the bags up there, but hotel personnel helped. The room was a bit dark (no windows, only 1 glass door to terrace) and the sitting area not very... More

It's an amazing experience to stay at this hotel. When we arrive, it was difficult to imagine that there was a luxury hotel inside. The inside modernity and simplicity is constrasting with the very old outside structure but the bet is a success. The atmosphere is restful. Our bedroom and bathroom was very large and comfortable. The bedding was completed... More

Being tourists, we look forward to staying in old monateries and castles, so this pousada is a very different experience. It's super-modern, with spartan furnishings (which are very designer, and cool), sleek angular designs -- but, we think, totally at odds with the heritage building it is in. Our bedroom and bathroom were large, spacious and had a nice deck... More

The hotel is located in an originally 14th-century monastery that was later converted into a palace. It is really a remarkable building and the exterior restoration of the building is perfect. From outside it resembles a beautiful castle. The place is very quiet and peaceful. There is a very nice outdoors swimming pool. The property is located in a very... More

It is amazing to find a luxury hotel created inside such an ancient building. When you approach the entrance, you cannot imagine what sort of accommodation you are going to find. We booked a superior room which was large and well appointed, with a nice balcony looking out across the surrounding farmand. We travelled in Octoer, and the hotel was... More

Among all the very good Pousadas this is even a special one. Super friendly staff, excellent food, great pool area, lovingly decorated room, spacious bar, billard room and fireside room. A great place to stay when you are looking for a peaceful and quite location to discover Portugal's Alentejo or Regiao Centro. Yes, the restaurant is a bit overpriced.

I love the Pousadas in general. Living in Lisbon now I have a lot of opportunity to travel around Portugal. It is truly a beautiful country with such wonderful landscapes, food and wine, and sites to see. I didn't know it this well before moving here. The Pousadas are a true find. They are very upscale, and some even qualify... More

This is a wonderful Pousada with beautiful appointments. The staff was very friendly, helpful and professional. We enjoyed our stay here. I agree with the other reviews that the restaurant is overpriced. However, I would HIGHLY recommend the Pousada. Very quiet and peaceful.

If you're looking for shopping, browsing, this isn't for you. If you want peace and quiet and at least a short drive to anything like civilization, this is your place. The structure is a bit difficult to navigate, so make a point of getting your bearings early on (left at the room with the billiards table, then up the 3... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Pousada do Crato is localized right in Alentejo, and installed in the old Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa Monastery. D. Alvaro Goncalves Pereira, Grand Prior to the Hospital and also the father of D. Nuno Alvares Pereira, had the building erected in the fourteenth century. In this important gothic national monument, you feel the spirits of medieval times in every corner taking us back to the time of the building of a new nation. This luxury hotel in Crato is an example of the recovery of a Historic building into modern times without losing the monastic feel, calm and peaceful. Outside there is a pool with a sun terrace which allows their guests a refreshing and clam moment to reenergize whilst listening to the sounds of the Alentejo plains. The richness of the Alentejo cuisine cannot be missed, in the Pousada's restaurant where pezinhos de coentrada (a pork dish with coriander) Coentrada de Cacao (dogfish and coriander) or Ensopado de Borrego (lamb stew) are their highlights. These dishes accompanied by a beautiful wine of the Alentejo region, are the true pleasures of life. ... more   less
