Spent just a single night there unfortunately. It had a unique feel to it with lots of original artwork around the place. The room was really nice, clean with homely feel to it. The kitchen and common room were all of the same standard. The owner, Paul, was great and coped with four extra walkers of the Heaphy track due... More

2009 hitchhiked from Queenstown with very little idea where I was going but did want to visit my grandfathers grave in Westport! WWI veteran who was a wild cat oil rigger in Canada and when he arrived in Westport 1926 quickly became secretary of the Watersiders Workers Union and the West Coast Communist Party! Karamea local and kaumatua George Snowdon... More

Although Karamea is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, I was still not impressed by this hostel. When we stayed they were having problems with the fuses so that the light in our room stopped working a couple of times. The room we stayed in was nice, but the bathrooms were dark and shower facilities were not up to... More

An awesome place to stay with awesome people. Paul, the owner remembers everyone and is very happy to show you the pictures with all his favourite guests. Karamea is out of the way, but it is the gateway to a very beautiful area and the Heaphy Track.

Karamea is not on the way to anywhere, but it's really worth coming just to stay at Rongo's . As a solo backpacker, it was perfect, because it's got a really friendly atmosphere, with people all cooking and eating together. One night we had a pot luck, and the whole place was just much more sociable and friendly than any... More

Fantastic place! For my wife and I Rongo, and the Karamea area, were the highlight of a seven week New Zealand trip full of pretty high experiences. We stayed four nights at Rongo and enjoyed ... - an amazing dinner prepared for us by the staff from local ingredients; - listening to the endless soundtrack provided by the on-site radio... More

Our family spent two nights at Rongo while we explored the Oparara Basin area. We were a family of five and got a dorm room to ourselves which we appreciated. Our adult children loved the radio station and enjoyed being DJs. The large common area is great place to meet other travelers. The kitchen was a bit small and could... More

We stayed at Rongos after biking the Heaphy track - well what a great idea that was. From the moment I contacted Paul to the moment we left to catch our flight back to Takaka nothing was too much trouble. The actual backpackers is incredible - fantastic double rooms, lovely lounge and everywhere you look there is something creative and... More

Stayed here after biking the Heaphy track. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Paul the owner was happy to advise us on other attractions in town. The backpackers has a great vibe with an eclectic mix of decor, murals and old-school furnishings which together make it a very homely place. We were able to store our bikes in a... More

We came by the Rongo Backpackers Hostel yesterday afternoon for the first time and when we walked in a weird atmosphere came across us. The girl at the front desk unfortunately did not speak very well english and did not understand us clearly while we were just asking for what was going on in town that night hoping that there... Hi Jorrit D, I'm sorry you weren't able to stay at Rongo. Rongo is a business and we provide services for paying guests, it is not a public facility. There is an unwritten agreement we have with our guests, that is to provide them with privacy, safety and security. To allow you to "hang out in the common room for... More
