Arrived and had the interesting walk down to the lodge. Quickly sorted into our rafting groups, and into our 34 bed dorm which was great fun! The beds were comfy, the rafting and the instructors were brilliant. The zip wire across the river from the lodge was great fun. The big feast laid out in the evening was brilliant, and... More

River Valley is a youth hostel type of accomodation with a focus on horseback riding in the countryside and rafting & kayaking on Ranganui river. The lodge is remotely located in a deep river valley, of reasonable quality and maintained in a home-steaders style. It offers camping, bunk-house accomodation and several luxury rooms. We had one of the latter. The... More

Hi Mrs Piket Seldom am I stumped about what to make of a review of River Valley. First of all you start of with a sensationalist heading “Backpackers adventure lodge operated as a cash-cow”. You then go on to say that pretty much everything was of a high standard. We are a family owned and operated company. We work hard... More

We just live this place. The staff are great, always friendly, thoughtful and very very good at what they do. The location is superb and the river is always sublime. The accommodation is very good and we love hearing the sound of the river. We plan to go back every year.

We rafted (the guides were so much fun) We horse back rode in the most scenic hills I have ever seen (Our guide Lizzy was awesome and patient) and we rode the Flying Fox which was a very fast zipline,... Hi Morinellen It is always such a pleasure to read reviews such as yours. What we find, and obviously it was you experienced, is that the more people do, the more they get out of their River Valley experience. Thanks again Brian Megaw More

I recently took a small group to River Valley Lodge where we stayed three nights. Everyone would have been happy to stay longer! It was a highlight of our tour of the North Island. We stayed in the rooms with private bathrooms which are very cosy and comfortable. The food was excellent, very friendly staff, absolutely beautiful place. We also... More

My brother and I stayed here for 2 nights & participated in the white water rafting, which was absolutely amazing!!! The guides were helpful and knowledgeable and provided many laughs during our raft briefing and run down the river. The staff at the lodge was also very nice and helpful. Food exceeded expectations. Take the river trolley to the other... More

I was travelling with the Kiwi Experience and we stayed there for one night. The rooms were ok and the price also ($29 for 6-bed dorm). But the kitchen is too small! I did the White Weather Rafting and it was absolutely amazing. The guides were hilarious and we had such a great time on the river :) We were... More

It is a bit of a drive to the lodge. But the whitewater kayaking was awesome and worth every $. The guides are funny, helpful and trustworthy. When driving yourself it is kind of scary to get there because the gravel road is very steep in the end. But we managed just fine with our camper van. Pictures were taken... More

This is not really a hotel but a destination! So much on offer from this base - we did rafting and a horse-trek - both of which were well organised, with all the gear provided. Amazing location - quite a surprise at the end of the gravel road! The staff were down to earth and friendly and doing trips and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you. ... more   less
