We are a family of 4. Mum, Dad, !6yr old girl & 13yr old boy. We'd already spent 3 weeks in NZ & having done a 10 day road trip down South already we were really hoping for a good night's sleep before our rafting the next day. We were not disappointed. The family room was a delight. The kids... More

We stopped off here for 1 night as part of a tour. The setting is remote and beautiful - the perfect place to relax after a couple of weeks on the road. Unfortunately there were not enough people to go rafting so we opted for the horse riding and loved it! Lizzie (our instructor) was brilliant and so knowledgeable -... More

My partner and I stayed at River Valley Lodge on Saturday 12/07/14. We purchased the double trouble package which included a beautiful room with river views, 3 couse dinner and breakfast in the morning. Food was amazing! Room was warm and very comfortable! Staff very friendly and helpful. The location of this lodge is just breathtaking, a must see when... More

Fantastic place for a getaway. The location is gorgeous, with the high cliffs and river running past the lodge. We had a room with private bathroom and were extremely comfortable. Loved the large dining hall with bar and massive open fire place. Our focus was the horse riding and it was amazing. We did a couple of days of home... More

Hi Catherine Thanks for your review of your time at River Valley. It always lifts our spirits and makes us want to achieve more when we receive such positive feedback. There is no doubt that River Valley Stables is providing a way deeper experience with horses through the use of Natural Horsemanship techniques. It is incredible to me how passionate... More

This place is literally in the middle of nowhere. No Internet, no cell service. BUT it's extremely relaxing this way. The staff have colorful personalities and the lodge is clean and comfy. We had rain while there and they started a fire in the lodge which maxed for a fantastic evening while everyone hung out by the fire. We stayed... More

Hi guys Thank for your review. Always great to hear from people who appreciate the Lodge feel of the place. Out of interest, the showers are generally hot - unless there has been a huge run on them. The water is heated by a wood fired boiler which has an excellent recovery time. All the best Brian More

Me and 2 friends made a stop here on the way to Ohakune- and so glad we did!!! I have previously stayed here as a stop on the kiwi experience bus and knew my friends would appreciate it, they were not disappointed. The room was very spacious and comfortable but basic, which was fine :) What made our time here... More

Had a really lovely time here, big spacious rooms, big spacious communal area, delicious food, well stocked bar (little pricey) The surrounding are beautiful, however there's not all that much to do if you don't want to go white water rafting or horse riding. There is no phone signal and the internet is crazy expensive. However this was actually a... More

Hi LadyV92 Thanks for your review. It does appear that conversation and making entertainment without an electronic device is becoming a lost art. Nice to see you rediscovered it. As far as not a lot to do is concerned. We are an Adventure Lodge, and what we deliver is river and horse based adventures. These define us. I am happy... More

Arrived and had the interesting walk down to the lodge. Quickly sorted into our rafting groups, and into our 34 bed dorm which was great fun! The beds were comfy, the rafting and the instructors were brilliant. The zip wire across the river from the lodge was great fun. The big feast laid out in the evening was brilliant, and... More

Hi MegTck9 Thank you for your review. We always appreciate getting great feedback on what we do. By the way, the big dorms are only available to Kiwi Experience customers and are in fact modeled loosely on the style of accommodation used in back country tramping (hiking) huts. All the best with your travels. Brian Megaw More

River Valley is a youth hostel type of accomodation with a focus on horseback riding in the countryside and rafting & kayaking on Ranganui river. The lodge is remotely located in a deep river valley, of reasonable quality and maintained in a home-steaders style. It offers camping, bunk-house accomodation and several luxury rooms. We had one of the latter. The... More

Hi Mrs Piket Seldom am I stumped about what to make of a review of River Valley. First of all you start of with a sensationalist heading “Backpackers adventure lodge operated as a cash-cow”. You then go on to say that pretty much everything was of a high standard. We are a family owned and operated company. We work hard... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you. ... more   less
