We treated ourselves to two nights here and what a treat it was. We stayed in one of the tatami cabins by the river. The meals and service were excellent and we tried all of the private baths. During the day we took a hike through the hills and had lunch in town but came back to our onsen for... More

This is a high quality hotel with nice people. I paid JPY50,000 for one room night with a private hot spring but surprisingly my room (all other rooms as well, I was told) didn't come with a shower! You have to go to public bathroom for that!!

This was our first real ryokan experience, and it was gorgeous. It was freezing cold when we were there, and it's really a special experience sitting in the hot outside onsen with half of your body exposed to the cold mountain air, and the other half submerged in pure hot spring water. We went back late in the evening and... More

Was there a few years ago, and the onsen is very, very nice. Very silent area without tourists. The surrounding area is very nice for walking and breathing the clear air. The service of the hotel was very friendly and the meals were simply gorgeous!

We only used the onsen facilities, but would love to stay there next time. Okunoyu is a bit isolated from the center of Kurokawa Onsen town, but well worth a visit. The facilities are very well kept and the staff is very welcoming. There are indoors gender-separated baths and open-air mixed baths, with a beautiful view of the greenery and... More

One night or two nights max is plenty of time to stay and experience the wonderful setting of this traditional onsen. There is really nothing else to do in the surrounding area, so you are free to fully enjoy the quiet tranquil baths and accommodations. There were periodic communications difficulties, but we always managed to figure out what was necessary.... More

We stayed here for one night. The Onsen is really a surprise. We didn't expect such a great view... Pros: - Onsen with water fall!!! - Free family onsen - Great breakfast Cons: - A bit far away from center - Hard to find even with a GPS in car

We had a two night trip from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day at Oku-no-yu ryoken and it was the perfect Christmas. Oku-no-yu is a very well run and welcoming ryoken, we had impeccable service from Yoko who was attentive, charming and funny at the same time! The chef prepared a Christmas feast for us that included a great sizzling beef... More

We stayed here as a party of six, a family of four ( children 12 and 16) plus two friends, father and son for one night. The place is very clean, the village is beautiful, but we had no idea what to expect. The place was booked by our friends's son who lives in Japan. The food is divine, but... More

I've travelled in Japan a great deal, and stayed in a lot of great places over the last 20+ years. This was one of the best. Let's deal with the negatives first - they're nearly all generic to this type of lodging. You have few choices - you'll upset the system if you arrive outside the window of 3:30-5:30ish, you...
